Nice or Villefranche

We can't decide on Nice or Villefranche for October. We wanted an oceanview hotel, but were dissappointed to see a major highway on Promenade d'Anglais in Nice. How busy is this road? Does it take away from the beauty of the oceanview?

Also, does anyone know what the weather is like the first week of October?

It is a busy road though i'm not sure it takes away from the beauty of the view -i suppose that would depend on whether or not the glazing was up to the job.

a friend stays on the promenade but she says she only notices the noise if she is out on her balcony

people walking on the promenade don't really notice the cars much except when actually crossing the road.

October weather is usually lovely and warm but it can rain except

if you have money, you can go in the next cities between nice and monaco

eze : cap estel

saint jean cap ferrat: grand hotel du cap

beaulieu : la réserve

a real nice view and no traffic if you ask a sea view room because these hotels are "on" the beach

most hotel in villefranche will be on the lowest cornice so a lot of traffic (ex/ versailles...)

it's difficult to stay in a touristic place and request a sea view and not a lot of traffic below

in cap d'antibes, the other side, you have also nice hotel with nice view

in all case, do not ask something at 50 or 100 euros per night, that will be minimum 200/300

If "ocean view" is what you want, and traffic is what you don't want, then Villefranche rather than Nice hits the spot. Nice is the travel hub and a splendid working city, but busy, even in October.

"The Prom" is a major pedestrian walkway about twenty people wide - the cars are three lanes each way but a fact of life and not really a "problem"

If you have a week you should get some good days but as said above, its mixed weather.

We used to have a flat in Nice and now have one in Villefranche. I wouldn't have moved if Villefranche hadn't been so close to Nice, 15 mins by bus and 7 by train (when they aren't on strike, as they were last week!). Villefranche is quieter and, away from the main road, almost traffic free.

The Welcome and the Darse in Villefranche are on the sea and don't have the race track of the promenade Des Anglais in front of them. Room 31 at the Darse has one of the best views anywhere in the Med, certainly for the price.

We have been in Nice/Villefranche in October in each of the last ten years and always had mainly sunny weather with afternoon temps close to 70F.

The Hotel Welcome in Villefranche is extreemly charming - waterfront and not too expensive. Be sure to rent a car and you explore the whole area from there. First week of October is usually around 72 and sunny....
