Hire Car in Cannes?

Hi All

I am going to Cannes for 4 days next month and am trying to decide how to get about. It's going to be nearly £100 to get to my hotel and back via a taxi and only about £29 more to hire a car for a couple of days and pay for a car park near the hotel. What would everybody with experience of Cannes do?

I must say I'm not a huge walker, or a huge fan of public transport, I would be hopping in and out of a taxi really and the thought of a hire car to go and see the difference parts really appeals.

Would people recommend having a car in Cannes or not? Is there lots of parking available when you drive about Cannes (obviously I wouldn't bother just driving down to the beach) :) Is it busy to drive in?

Thank you :)

For the last 2 yrs we haven't bothered having a car, but hired by the day for excursions when wanted. The parking became a hassle, and although I've not been in August, I imagine it's worse then. The traffic itself will likely be heavier too. We certainly haven't missed having one (very often days would go by without using the car at all!), but then we do enjoy walking and the public transportation is great for our needs.

There is for instance a little Blue shuttle bus "E-LO" (runs on solar! comes about every 15 minutes) that does a loup around the main areas, including much of the Croisette, rue d'Antibes, the train station and stops also just minutes away from the Old Port . It cost 0.60 Euros and that ticket is good all day long as many times as you wish. Just look for the painted Blue lines on the streets and wave at the driver (faites mois signe).

The taxi from the airport to Cannes usually runs us 90 Euros but there is a direct bus (takes about forty minutes) that only costs 14 or so. Our daughter got on the wrong bus this year, which took her all around the houses but it cost 1.30 Euros LOL!

You don't really need a car while in Cannes, as the town is fairly compact--and parking is expensive. But if you plan to visit sights outside of Cannes, then a car can be very useful.

Soames -

The Airport - Cannes connection is now really confusing for many travellers. The half-hourly fast coach (RCA/ 14 euro) goes via the motorway, so no traffic problems. But for some time now the TAM Nice-Cannes slow route 200 has stopped off at Terminal 1 to pick up passengers bound for Cannes.

Since the Lignes d'Azur dropped the fare beginning of this year from a distance based one to a flat 1.30 euro, no-one can compete. 1.30 or 14 ? Moreover no-one seems to understand the difference between the two buses so they board the slow bus "because its there"

Its not really equipped for thirty people with masses of luggage, and its a nightmare and gets caught up in the slow crawl through Cagnes to Biot, but no-one seems that bothered.

Vive La France! Cheers

NiceLife ~ I was wondering how my daughter came to board that bus! She did arrive late, i.e. it was dark, so no wonder she took the wrong one. Just goes to show ~ one should "never" lol, make assumptions.
