5 Days in December

Hello - we (two couples around 30 yrs old) are planning to visit Cote d'Azur in December for 5/6 days - tentatively Dec 18 - 23rd.

What kind of weather should we expect?

Are most sites/restaurants still open close to Christmas time?

Any advice on itineraries? Potentially would like to be able to visit the bigger cities - Nice, Cannes, Monaco and Monte Carlo. But also would love to be able to visit some smaller towns/villages to embrace the local people and culture. Any recommendations?

Any/all advice is greatly appreciated!! Thank you!

NIce is a year-round city. Nothing really closes in the "off season." It is particularly festive around Christmas....it would be a great base for your visit.

Monte Carlo is part of Monaco....and Monaco is tiny. It would easily fit inside of Central Park.

Smaller villages usually equates to quiet in December. Villefranche, which is just a few miles from NIce is stunningly beautiful, but is quite quiet in December. The views from Eze are gorgeous and if you have a bright, sunny day...try and get there. It is teeming in the summer, but will be basically empty in December.....but the views never "close."

As above Nice is bustling in December, it is lovely around this time and everything will be open (more or less) as in summer.

For "villages" I always recommend Vence (a town) and Tourrettes-sur-Loup, a perched village in the mountains above Nice both are 'open' and busy in December. In Vence you have the "Matisse chapel" which is well worth a visit and Tourrettes is a cobbled village with glorious views of the coast. If you have a hire car try Gourdon, too, and Eze as mentioned previously.

Nice has an open-air Christmas market in addition to the regular one at the Cours Saléya, on the edge of the old town. You'll find plenty to do in beautiful Nice.
