Which area to stay? Antibes, Cannes, Juan les Pins or ???

We're a family with 2 young kids (4 and 8) who are staying in Villefranche sur Mer and are looking for another place to stay beforehand for 1 week. We'd like to be close to a beach, are looking for self catering and activities/sights for children. We'd like easy transit access from that location to Villefranche. We're not interested in Nice, as it's too close to Villefranche. Any suggestions? Thank you.

I cannot suggest anywhere else but Antibes. Several fine ( and completely free) beaches- unlike Cannes where most are paying - and around 50 mainly good restaurants all in a small walkable area The very picturesque Old Town with its lovely lived- in streets Provencal Market , Cathedral and Picasso Museum will give you all a fairly compact exposure to mediterranean French culture that would be hard to find elsewhere on the coast. When you're tired of that you can stroll past some of the world's largest yachts on the International Quay.

Self catering accomodation is reasonbly easy to find here - you can download a list for all budgets ( see Residences du Tourism) from the tourist office website ;

www.antibesjuanlespins.com

And all you have to do is jump on the train from Villefranche.

I would pick Antibes of the three-nice public beaches , not too commercialised

Aslo there are more kids activities , Marineland, Petite ferme , Crazy golf, funfair called Antibesland, and Aquasplash

plus a good clothes/shoes/bags/ etc market on the Thursday morning. Provençal market every day but monday , castles Chateau grimaldi and Fort Carré etc, the huge marina which is always fun to walk around to 'pick a favourite boat'

Juan les pins isn't far away for a brasher, more 'in your face' type holiday experience -and karting , water based [paying] activities etc

when are you coming? how will you be getting around

All three places you mention are close together and fairly easy to commute between.

You don't say when you will be visiting but Juan Les Pins has less activities on offer than the others at any time of year.

As as base I would pick Cannes beacuse it is flat and compact and more pushchair friendly than Antibes. Rail and bus connections are much more accessible than Antibes because everything is in the centre of town.

The Croisette in Cannes is great for walking/ rollerblading/cycling and there are small childrens' amusement parks at either end, plus the Petit Train which is fun for kids. Ferries to the Isles de Lerins( Man in the Iron Mask fortress etc ) and St Tropez are on the doorstep. There are great markets in particular Marche Forville , a castle and two marinas.

The larger childrens' amusement parks, Marineland, Aquasplash etc. are well outside Antibes and require transport to get to wherever you stay.

There is also a lot more self catering accommodation in Cannes in close proximity to the 7 miles of sandy beaches which include public stretches.

If you choose an apartment in the" banane", the central area of Cannes everything is easy walking distance, including the shopping which is second only to Paris in France. Supermarkets, restaurants and bars abound.

Hope this helps

Thanks everyone for your advice. We're planning our stay in August (busy time, I know). I guess it's between Cannes and Antibes for us. Are there any public beaches near la banane in Cannes?

Hi there,

Yes there are public beaches at both ends of the Croisette and also just round the corner from the old port - the Plages du Midi.

Like all beaches on the Cote d'Azur they do get crowded in August.

There are more public beaches at Palm Beach, the easterly end of Cannes - they can be reached using the open top bus which runs all the way along the Croisette .

If you are in Cannes in August, you should be able to catch one of the evening firework displays which are part of the annual international pyrotechnic competition too.

Thanks SOOOZ. I found a nice apartment near the Gambetta market. What is that market like? I'm liking the sound of Cannes!

The Gambetta market area is just inside the banane north of the rue d'Antibes. The market is quite small and mornings only. It has a range of produce stalls- mainly fruit and vegetables plus a few that do charcuterie/cheeses. The majority is given over to cheap clothing and bric a brac. In the afternoons the market becomes a carpark. There are shops, bars and restaurants literally on your doorstep.

The area is handy for the railway station . Some friends of ours rented an apartment on rue Jean Jaures near the market and enjoyed it but found it noisy especially early in the morning because of the market and road traffic along the small but busy street. Plus the railway line and a fast highway run along the north of the market, so check the aspect of the apartment you have found. Buildings around the market tend to be old without elevators or outside space. Also look for aircon in August.

Hello again,

The apartment looks nice .

From what I can tell it's in one of the few modern buildings on the north side of Marche Gambetta overlooking the market square. Think it's probably the residence above a bakery on the fairly busy corner of the market aquare where traffic turns right onto the Voie Rapide highway . There is a pedestrian underpass under the highway next to the building.

The front of the building will suffer from some market and traffic noise, although it may not be too bad if you are high up.

The pictures show distant views of the hills from the bedroom windows at rear of the apartment, but the immediate view will probably be of the highway and railway line which run just behind the building.

There could be noise and vibration issues depending on how well insulated the apartment is.

The price looks good though and the balcony looks lovely.

Hope this helps
