Is there a significant difference inthe price of tickets bought in advance online versus at the station the day of or a day before a trip?

Yes. Taking Paris-Avignon as an example, if you buy when tickets go on sale (3 months before travel), you can buy a ticket for €25. If you wait until shortly before travel, you will probably have to pay the full price of €94.

You can get train times and costs, and make bookings, in English at www.tgv-europe.com/en but use Antarctic as the "Ticket collection country" in the first screen to avoid being transferred to RailEurope, which has higher prices and does not list all the trains. And how! A few years back, we had to give up on our non-refundable/non-exchangeable PREM (discounted and purchased ahead of time) tickets and purchase tickets one day prior to travel. We licked our wounds for a while. :)

The above all apply to long distance travel, say between Avignon and Paris. For local journeys, say day trips to Arles or Nimes, there is no price advantage in booking in advance.

Ditto no price differential along the Cote d'Azur cpastal train line say St Raphael - Cannes- Nice-Monaco-Menton. You can also buy a summer go -anywhere day ticket for 14 euro.
