Base in south of provence

We stayed last year near Montelimar, so got to see northern provence/provencal. This year we wanted to stay in the south of provence , so we can do Luberon etc. Is Aix en Provence a good base for this ? We wanted to go back to Avignon markets , but also do Cannes etc. Prefer a large village atmosphere . We go from here to Rome so a TGV location within 30 minutes is probably needed. Any suggestions greatly appreciated

Aix is an OK base....too big for my taste, but you are looking a large village...Aix is a city.

Cannes is over a 2 hour drive each way from Aix.

How long are you going to be in Provence? If more than a week, you could split your stay between two bases, and spend a week somewhere more central to western Provence than Aix is (Avignon, the Luberon, the Alpilles) and a week on the cote d'azur.

We are actually looking for a atmospheric village like Grignan or Duilefete that is within an hours drive of Aix . Anyone got suggestions ? Somewhere where you have a choice of places to eat but still in the country. We stayed in the country in Montelimar. Loved it, but missed being able to go out and eat at night
