where to stop?

We would like to stop on our way between Mont St Michel and Bordeaux, stay a night in a cosy, historic town, wine & dine. Could you please recommend somewhere, worth a stop over?

Parthenay is a facinating medieval lttle town and roughly half way. Nearby, Niort is rather larger and Fontenay-le-Compte may also be worth considering. Slightly further south, I like Saintes. Google their Tourisme sites.

I'd recommend La Rochelle as there is very little to do in Niort or Saintes. La Rochelle is lovely this time of year, lots going on, inc the jazz festival next week.
