Good base for vineyards/chateaux in Tours area?

My wife and I have just booked a week in June in a gites in the Aude region of France. We want to break up our journey from Calais with a 2 day stay in the Loire, probably somewhere in the area around Tours. At the moment the plan is to drive to this area via Chartres cathedral (we'll get out of the car for that!).

Is Tours the best base for exploring this area or other there better alternatives? (Angers is probably too far west).

Thanks

If you don't have a car then Tours makes a great base but since you'll have a car then I would choose someplace else as Tours can be a pain to drive into and out of with a car. I like Chinon and Loches as bases, both attractive medieval towns with ample services and amenities. You can have a look at this thread to get links to the tourist office websites for these and other towns as well as links to châteaux and wine websites:

I find nothing wrong with staying in Tours, stayed there last night in fact. Tours has some wonderful restaurants, is centrally located, has its own museums, and Place Plumereau is a night time delight with numerous restaurants and cafés.

However, I might also consider the following near Tours:

Saumur and Amboise are another two Loire Valley towns good for stopovers. In Saumur at least you have ready access to plenty of wine tasting - white, red, bubbly, rose - its all made here. There are also a couple of Chateaux worth visiting - Saumur and Breze - and you are on the Autoroute and main road south to Poitiers.

Amboise is a bit more touristy but very pretty.

Enjoy!
