Good Oysters....

We have taken all the suggestions given and will be driving frm Paris to Bayeux for 2 nights (skipping MSM this trip) and returning to Paris on Saturday.

I am thinking of leaving Bayeux and stopping in Honfleur before we return to Paris. Any suggestions for lund and good oysters? We just read a great article about Oysters (Chicago newspaper) in the MSM area so I was hoping there are other places to find them. Had great ones in Nice years ago.

I thought there was a market in Bayeux on Saturday but have read that is Sunday. Anyone know if it is Saturday or Sunday.

Thank You

I have eaten Oysters in Honfleur they were fine!!

However, "THE" place for Oysters is Cancale, on the Brittany coast near to St Malo. Perhaps that is the place you are thinking of??

Of course it is in completely the opposite direction from Bayeux, to Honfleur!!

Their 'best' Oysters are the native 'Cancale Belons' aka 'Pied de Cheval' which are a type of Ostria oyster and different to Rock Oysters (gigas). Cancale Belons have AOC status.

They are pretty much the same species of Oyster as our own Colchester Natives (these, IMO being the best oysters I have eaten, ever - I have no qualms about being biased here). I suspect that Whitstable Natives are also the same species (tho being from 'south of the river' they are just strange!!) ;-)

Anyway, back to Honfleur - it's a long time since I have been there, but I did a 'google' based on 'Honfleur Oysters' and these places that appear to specialise a bit, came up - no idea if they are listed on TA, but you could have a look, I guess!!:

Otherwise, being as there are plenty of restaurants all around the Old Harbour and around the town, suggest you just go for a wander and see who has a seafood bar that looks the freshest!

Happy munching!!

EssexWanderer is right-on with his comments about the oysters in Cancale. While it has been awhile since we were last there, I can still remember visiting the Sunday Market, much of which was being held out on the beach at low tide. We got to taste several oysters that morning, and had our mid-day meal at Le Coquillage, the wonderful restaurant at the Hotel de Bricourt-Richeux

Yum, we stopped at Cancale. Ate in a restaurant (1doz for me) but plenty of people were buying from the tents by the water and there was a huge midden of empty shells. Plus the cafe over the road sold wine by the glass so you could have it at your picnic; oysters and sancerre perhaps.

ROFL!!! I suspect (being from North of "the river" myself) I am the only one on this forum who will understand this comment. I always thought EW was a man too!!!

I hate oysters but my OH would live on them if he could. Cancale oysters, bought off the quayside for 4.50 a dozen are the best he's ever had, he says.

Of course, Rosepointe, to experience them at their best you need to be here when there's an R in the month. The market in Bayeux is on a Saturday and there is a market in Port en Bessin on a Sunday, where you will also be able to get good oysters.
