There are no direct trains from Bayeux to Calais, and no buses. The French train system is based on Paris.

You have to take a train from Bayeux to Paris Gare St Lazare, then the RER for one stop to Gare du Nord for a train to Calais-Frethun. If you have not yet booked the Eurostar, it would be easier to take it from Gare du Nord.

Sad but true, the train is faster via Paris than the local route Bayeux-Caen-Rouen-Calais. Bus hopping would prove challenging also. For 3-4 people, a one way car rental might work time/cost wise.

That's probably because there isn't one.

As per the posters above - come back into Paris and catch the Eurostar from Paris.

Thank you all for your prompt responses...

Since we're booked on the Eurostar from Calais it appears we will be renting car at Caen and returning it to Calais.

By the way, how many 'chunnels' are there??

There are no "chunnels". There is one "Channel Tunnel", with two services using it.

The trains carrying only passengers are called Eurostar, and the trains carrying road vehicles are called Eurotunnel.

One-way car rentals in France usually have a one-way fee that is either small or zero.

Correction accepted!

Evidently, we're booked on the Eurostar (from Frethun to ST Pancras)

As you would actually be wanting a more expensive journey (unless you got a special offer) are you not able to change it from Calais to Paris?

Actually, we got a very reasonable fare from Calais to London.

The rental car will allow us to explore more of the countryside on our own.

Thank you for your advice.

Tolls will be over 20 Euros on the fastest route, so worth taking some slower scenic routes if you want to explore some towns. Think Michelin maps can help with that. It is frustrating about the trains. When we stayed at Montreuil which is close to Calais none of the train options quite connected or worked for us.
