2 glorious weeks on the Cotentin Peninsula

We are spending 2 weeks in August in a cottage near Negreville on the Cotentin Peninsula and have various activities planned including d day beaches, bayeau, MSM etc. I wondered if there were any hidden gems that perhaps are not widely advertised that someone could recommend to me - this could be villages to visit, markets, coastal walks, beautiful views. We will have our bikes with us too so any good bike route recommendations would be very welcome.

Thanks in advance

No specific recommendations but check out the tourist office websites and be sure to visit tourist offices in person as they have loads of info, often not mentioned in guidebooks:

To the west of Cherbourg is a rocky coastline. Gruchy is where Francois Millet (the painter of peasant scenes) was born. Manoir du Torp was where Polansky's film Tess was filmed.

To the east is the valley of the Saire. Barfleur, Saint Vast la Hougue, Tatihou (you go on an amphibious boat)

At cherbourg;: fort de la Roule, Cite de la mer, Nuclear submarine.

Hi there, an excellent choice for a holiday!

I would strongly recommend a visit to the town of Granville which is on the west coast of the Peninsula. The "old town" is great with narrow cobbled streets and wonderful views. You would need to look for the "haute ville"

Also, if you fancy buying some local cider or apple juice direct from a farm (it's delicious, I bought some last week) then pay a visit to "Cidrerie Le Père Mahieu" leperemahieu.com/cidrerie-le-pere-mahieu.php which is located around 8 miles south of Cherbourg, off the beaten track but well worth seeking out.. It's in a maze of narrow lanes which are perfect for cycling.

In Cherbourg itself there's the fantastic Cite de la Mer - http://www.citedelamer.com/en/ which offers visits to a retired nuclear submarine, one of the deepest aquariums in France and a great Titanic exhibition.

Market wise, there are many but on Tuesdays there's a market in the lovely town of Portbail, if you want an unusual day out there's a 1930 tourist train which offers return trips on the Market day.. Take a look at http://ttcotentin.monsite-orange.fr/

The town of Barfleur at the very top right hand corner of the peninsular is a wonderful little town, in some ways it reminds me of the more famous Honfleur.

These are just a few of my own personal favourites, let me know if you need any more information, otherwise have a fantastic holiday!

Thanks very much Frontera - that all sounds fantastic. We are staying in a cottage near Negreville/Bricquebec so everything is close at hand and we are taking our bikes so this will be perfect. Thanks very much for your advice.
