D Day Tour Guides from Bayeux

Battlebus and Overlord have been very popular tour groups based in Bayeux. My personal experience was with Overlord, and I recommend them highly:

http://www.overlordtour.com/

At the time of our travel, Overlord was a company that had French guides, and we found the commentary from a guide for whose countrymen had lived through the D Day experience especially moving. There were moments that were both proud and humbling.

Battlebus is also highly recommended on this forum and you may have trouble finnding them. Battlebus has scaled back, and I'll let these links from the owner explain how the company has reorganized:

http://www.battlebus.fr/

http://www.ddayhistorian.com/

Information on how you might find the Battlebus tour guides has been supplied by several contributors on this post and others:

tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g187179-i607-k4177…

I will try to consolidate that info here and hope others will contribute. I don't know these guides or their companies, but I trust TA travelers' experiences with Battlebus As part of the Battlebus team, these guides are likely to have been part of the reputation Battlebus has enjoyed on this forum, and I hope that other TA contributors will help you make your decision.

This info may change as these businesses establish themselves, but to start a traveler on their search, here are some links:

These two guides seem to have their own businesses:

http://www.american-dday-tours.com/

A popular Battlebus guide seems to have joined this company:

www.ddaybattletours.com/contact-book.html

Additionally, for those of you who would like to tour on your own, here is a link for audio guides:

Here is link for a discussion and list of private guides posted on the Normandie forum:

tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g187179-i607-k3567…

I know how intimidating it is to start a search for a trip. I enter a new forum and I look for the guys who contribute here. I trust them and wish they were there. I hope these links are helpful and others will contribute their suggestions.

Happy planning!

If you would care to put together a group of 5 people you can book the tour for the same €475. If you want to book for yourselves alone the price does not change just because there are only two of you. You are paying for the guide and the vehicle for the day. The price does not vary. The vehicle can presumably carry up to 5 people but the operator is not obliged to scour the hedgerows looking for 3 more people to join you on the day you choose.

And yes, you are right. That is exactly what "private" means in this context and not just in the case of Dale Booth. It's the same anywhere. Private tours are for those who want to travel only with their friends or family, not a random group of people. Some people will use a private guide because they want a custom-designed tour that will visit places not on the ordinary itineraries of the group tours.

The small-group tour operators listed on this thread will take you on a guided tour of the beaches for around €80 each.

Private means private. What is so hard to understand about that? There are private tours and there are group tours. This is true all over the world, in Egypt or France or the United States. If you want a tour with a random group of people there are operators in Bayeux who offer those. Dale Booth offers private tours.

I really don't get the point you think you are trying to make.

Definition of a private tour as per the terminology used by Normandy based operators is a private tour is booked by one party. Multiple groups can not be merged into one tour, this is what is referred to as a group tour which are charged per person not per group. The reason why some operators only offer private tours as per the above definition is that they are only licensed (by law) to operate private, not public tours.

I find your complaint against Dale without foundation, you have simply misunderstood the different kind of tours which are offered. Thousands of people clearly understand this system yet you do not, your failure to interpretate the terminology correctly assumed by 99.9 percent of people looking for tours should not be used as a foundation for a complaint against one of the very best guides in the business.

Having known Dale and Bebbie Booth for over 6 years I can assure anyone out there that they simply do not have it in their character to be rude to any person be them potential clients or not. Any claim that either Dale or Debbie were rude to you I am sure are without foundation. Just because you misunderstand what you are being told should not be misconcieved that the person is being rude to you. Dale Booth enjoys universal respect amongst his peers in Normandy, there are very, very few people you can say that about.

Dale Booth is a business competitor of mine but I can assure anyone reading this that if you booked a tour with him you will receive an unforgottable experience when visiting the Normandy battlefields in nothing but a positive way.

Maybe Colin, our local expert could expand on this or even better delete these ridiculous comments aimed against a person at the very top of his trade?

Well said NBT. This discussion, anyway, is going off the topic of troggs original intention, which was update/create a list of D-Day tour guides as an aid for those looking for such.

Perhaps we should make 2 threads, one for Private tours, and one for Group tours. Maybe that will be a bit less ambiguous for those who do not understand the difference!

Gresmi seems to have trouble unserdstanding "Private tour". As Stuart mentioned private tour guides HAVE to give private tours whereas tour operators can offer a per person tour. As a private guide I take the same basic tarif for a day, for a bus of 70 people or one person alone. The tarif is then modified by place of RDV and whether I use my vehicle.

People on cruises have the advantage of Cruiscritic forums which provide a place for finding like minded travelers to make up a bigger group. But in that case I just deal with the organiniser of the group not a per person charge.

If you are at Bayeux you'd have your work cut out to do the same thing and you can't complain about a private guide who CANNOT do that for you.

If you find 400€ too much you can take a minibus group tour.

Gresmi - I suggest you contact the French ministry of transport who will explain to you what I and others have obviously failed to get through to you.

Its the law - live with it!
