beaches - where to go.

Hi all,

I'm looking for some suggestions on where to go.....Just to give you some background first.

We travel heaps and have been to France before, we are attending 2 conferences one in Paris (4 days) and the other in Bordeaux ( 4 days) in mid August.

We know it will be busy and crowded at this time of the year. We will be driving from A - B but want a little holiday before the conference starts in Bordeaux and returns to Paris.

We have been to Paris numerous times so that part is okay.

We absolutely love the ocean so I'm looking for a suggestion regarding what beaches are the best. Hubby loves to body surf so any beaches with waves....

We are thinking of driving from Paris down to Caen to visit Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword, afterwards a coastal drive to where ? before Bordeaux.

Is there any major seaside resorts we should consider.

We have been to Biarritz before so looking for something different with a comfortable hotel, nice beach with good waves , cafes & restaurants/ ....

Is there a place ??

thanks a million and appreciate all your advise.

EM.

Not totally in the right direction for Bordeaux but if you have the time try the Brittany coasts

The northern coast is very dramatic with lovely cliffs and some good beaches - after a visit to Mont St Michel you could try the lovely inland town of Dinan before heading to the magical rocks around Treburden

Alternatively the southern coast around Carnac (ancient stone monuments)and Quiberon is magical

Further down the French Atlantic coast you could try Ile de Re but in August half of Paris will be there with you

if you are going to visit the D Day sites, I would suggest a tour over driving yourself around. You'll see more and better understand the history behind you are seeing. I would suggest Overlord, a French company, or Battlebus, an British company. Both travel in small groups and are well worth the fares. Stay at the Hotel Churchill in Bayeux for these tours.

A quick Google shows there are surf schools all along the Atlantic coast which so surfing's not confined to the south-west, though that's where it's probably best.

The Normandy coast where you're going is in the English channel - not great for surf. But there are surf clubs at Trouville and near Cherbourg, so it's not out of the question.

PS - Mont St Michel is officially in Normandy, not Brittany. But it's not worth going to war over ;)
