Toulouse and Albi in a weekend

Hi

We will be flying into Toulouse airport and have a weekend in October. We are considering the below options.

1. Toulouse for 2 days

2. Toulouse (1 day) and Albi (1 day)

3. Albi for 2 days.

What will be your recommendation? We have never been to both places, but heard Albi is a bit nicer? Are places closed on Sundays in both Toulouse and Albi? What times are the siestas which we have to watch out for?

Appreciate any advice.

Thanks

Chris

I would spend either 2 days in Toulouse or 1 day in Toulouse and one day in Albi.

Shops are closed on Sundays. Superettes are usually open on Sunday until 12 or 1 pm. In small towns shops close at lunch time (12 to 2 pm) but in large cities like Toulouse, they are open all day (usually 9 or 10 am to 7 pm). Museums are open on Sundays.

Siestas? That's in Spain!

Albi (50,000 inhabitants) is not "nicer" than Toulouse (the 4th largest city in France), it is different.

In October you are more likely to get wet than need a siesta.

Albi is only about an hour by train from Toulouse, an easy day trip if you didn't wish to uproot yourselves. I enjoyed my day there.

Local trains, so no reservations available.

I would do Toulouse (1 day) and Albi (1 day) staying in Toulouse and taking a day trip to Albi. Then you will have one full day and one more evening in Toulouse. Do not miss a walk around famous Basilica Saint-Sernin at night - it is magical.

One day in Albi is enough to see gorgeous Albi Cathedral and the best collection of Toulouse-Lautrec in the world, if you like his art. The main reason for my day trip was to go the Musee Toulouse-Lautrec, it was opened even on a holiday.

I posted the links to my reviews below:

You can take a bus from Albi to see lovely Cordes-sur-Ciel, one of the most beautiful villages in France.

Enjoy your trip!

Both Toulouse and Albi are well worth exploring its arguably more to see in Toulouse so I would aim to spend more time there.

Thanks for all your responses. Is half day in Albi enough?

Our flight arrives in Toulouse about 10am on Saturday. If we get the 12.31pm train, is there enough time for us to explore Albi on Saturday for about 4 hours? That leaves us with Saturday evening in Toulouse and whole day Sunday (our flight departs 10pm). Is it worth doing?

Hi Chris,

If you are not planning to spend significant time in the Museum of Toulouse-Lautrec, then 4 hours would be enough.

I loved my day in Albi. I went by train. I do remember that a lot of things were closed for a couple of hours over lunch time, so do your research about the attractions you want to see. The Cathedral was open over lunch so I looked at that, had lunch, then went to the Toulouse Latrec Museum, which was fantastic. If you're not into art, the Gardens around it are beautiful. I wouldn't spend two days there.

You could definitely spend the two days in Toulouse and never run out of things to do. It's a lovely city.

Thanks for your all feedback. Is one full day and one evening in Toulouse ok?

We are not that interested in museums...

Hi Chris,

Yes, was enough for us. Would love to have more time, but mostly for the museums. You will love evenings in Toulouse. There is also a big market on the Place du Capitole - a lot of junk, but fun to browse.

Enjoy!

Nora

Toulouse is nicer with lots to visit in old Roman town... otherwise, you can do 1/2 day in Albi and the other half go and visit: Cordes Sur Ciel . Stunning hilltop medieval village not to be missed.
