How affordable - oysters?

How affordable is it, and where should I get oysters (even takeaway is fine).. I figured since they produce oysters in France, that it might be cheap(er) and fresher here than in Singapore?

Thank you :)

Hi

From the leaflet that dropped into my letterbox this morning (oysters are big at Christmas) allow from about five euro a kg to buy from the supermarkets. Eating at a restaurant they will be more.

The price normally goes up at Xmas !

Low cost supermarket Lidl are offering Normandy oysters at €3 per dozen pre Xmas : www.lidl.fr/fr/super-samedi.htm…

Prices start at €4 per dozen at my local market, direct from the (Med) producer.

They have more flavour than tropical oysters.

By comparison, oysters in Sydney are about 10 euro a dozen...

Thanks, everyone! I am going in mid-Jan. And just got back from Tasmania last week - missing oysters greatly. I will haunt the supermarkets daily when I am there. :):)

Price varies a lot with quality.

Lidl oysters are cheap and tasteless, on local market Victor Hugo good oysters goes for 10 euros the dozen or more.

I really suggest to invest on quality.

Sorry no knowledge of australian oyster! Just there are so many types of oyster it's impossible to talk about a fixed price or fixed quality for oysters in General... Like talking about how much is a bottle of wine!

I wouldn t buy oysters in supermarket especially for a short visit! Visit a fish market and go for the best!

I've found oysters in France quite inexpensive, especially in shops. I would buy from a fish market or a seafood vendor at an outdoor market, rather than at a grocery store. Here in coastal Maine, which is probably the rival of France for the quality of its oysters, oysters are usually around $1.50-$2.00 per oyster at a fish market, maybe double that at a restaurant. I believe prices in France are generally much less.

Again, it depends on quality. At restaurants you ll find same restaurant price of Maine.

Fish vendors here in Toulouse go from 0,80 to 2 euros the unit.
