San Sebastián to Lourdes

We would like to visit Lourdes with an overnight stay from Sebastian. We will have a rental car but needs suggestions whether is better to drive or use other means of transport, train, bus & also where to stay B&B or not too expensive hotel near the Sanctuary. Comments and suggestions will be greatly appreciated

1. Re: San Sebastián to Lourdes

It's approximately a 2 hour drive from San Sebastian to Lourdes. The train journey requires a change and can take longer. When booking a hotel it would be advisable to choose one that provides parking as street parking can be at a premium during the pilgrimage season. Other posters may wish to recommend their personal preference, but there are very many hotels, all within reasonable walking distance to the Sanctuary, so I suggest you click on the FAQ link at the top right hand of this page for this and other information that will help you during your stay.

If you have a Spanish rental car you may incur extra charges taking it into France and you will certainly incur extra charges if you don't go back to Spain.

Going by train will take a minimum 3 hours, nearer 4 in most cases as there are very few direct trains between Hendaye (at the border) and Lourdes. There is no direct bus, although there are two per day between San Sebastian and Bayonne from where the trains to Lourdes can be taken.

PS I hope you are no going any time soon as the railway line has been damaged by storms and floods (again) and is currently closed between Bayonne and Pau with buses running in place of trains.

Thank you for your information , we had forgotten about the car rental policies about crossing borders. We might end up doing the bus/train option, ill research further. We are going at the end of May, hope the trains are up and running by then.
