Time Management

Hello! We are a group of five planning to take a train from Barcelona to possibly Perpignan then rent a car and continue to Carcassonne. We will be returning the car in Bordeaux five days later. We are taking the train in the hopes that this reduces our rental car costs going from Spain to France.

1. Does this seem like a reasonable enough plan?

2. Should we stay overnight in Perpignan or can we reasonably continue on to Carcassonne the same day? We plan to stay a night in Toulouse then will be in Aubuterre for a wedding after that.

If you take an early high speed train to Perpignan you can safely continue to Carcassonne on the same day. It Only takes 1h 20 min on the train. Use google maps or viaMichelin or any other travel planner to estimate distances.

Sounds like a good plan. You can easily make it to Carcassonne which is only 116 km from Perpignan over the autoroutes. Use www.viamichelin.com to get distance, routes and costs including tolls.

Before proceeding to Carcassonne I suggest you drive half an hour South of Perpignan to see picturesque Collioure. From there it's 150 km to Carcassonne, about a 1.5 hour drive.

Take the train all the way to Narbonne and rent the car in Narbonne. You'll only be 60 km from Carcassonne and you won't even need to take the highway : the regular road 3-lane road is excellent between the 2 towns. Besides the train runs between the lagoon and the sea and the landscape is stunning between Perpignan and Narbonne. You might even see pink flamingoes.

It is not as spectacular from the highway.

Pvoyageuse- We were told by an acquaintance to visit the castles at Peyrepertuse and Queribus. I am thinking we would not be able to do that the same day as leaving Barcelona and taking the train into France though? Would it be a nice stop for us to stay in Narbonne, back track to the castles, then continue on to Carcassone? Thank you again for your help!

At what time are you leaving Barcelona? Are you planning to overnight somewhere before getting to Carcassonne? Will you stop to have lunch on your way? It seems a bit rushed to me to try to see everything in one day but it is very doable in two.

It is easy to drive to Peyrepertuse and Queribus from Perpignan - the road is excellent. But I doubt you'll have time to visit both unless you leave Perpignan before noon. Instead, stop in Lapradelle-Puilaurens which is on your way, and visit the castle there, then continue to Carcassonne via Quillan and Limoux. You'll see Queribus from the main road. Doable in one day.

Another possibility, if you overnight in Narbonne, is to drive to Maury via Durban and Tuchan. This is if you don't mind winding and twisty roads through the Corbieres. It will take you 2 hours to get there but it is very scenic.

Finally, also doable in one day : from Narbonne drive to Abbey of Fontfroide (13 km on the road to Lezignan), make a small detour to Abbey of Lagrasse and continue to Carcassonne. Doable in one day.

Thank you so much for all of these wonderful suggestions! Looks like I have some more homework to do!

We plan to leave Barcelona early, but we do have an extra night we can spend at either Narbinne or Perpignan because I agree it would not be wise to rush it all in one day. We leave Spain on a Tuesday morning and need to be in Aubeterre-sir-Dronne that Friday afternoon for a wedding. We were planing to spend one night in Carcassone and one in Toulouse. All of you suggestions are so very helpful! Thank you!!!
