Perpignan to Madrid by Train

I know there seems to be nly one train from Perpignan to Madrid (via Barcelona).

We are travelling early August 2014. I know this is a 'pie in the sky' type of question, but

can there be a difficulty in actually getting seats on this train? Well will book prior to leaving New Zealand, but still a littl concerned as if we miss out it will obviously have 'a domino' effect on the rest of the trip. Thoughts appreciated.

Thanks

Susan

The issue still exists that if you have two tickets for a journey that crosses a national border the second ticket will probably be useless if your first train is late and you miss your connection.

This is especially the case in France and Spain where almost all long distance trips require reservation. You cannot just jump on any later train as that might be sold out already.

It is always a good idea to buy the whole international trip on one ticket, so that in the event of a delay you are covered by the CIV regulations.

The introduction of direct high speed trains between Perpignan and Barcelona will obviate the need to change trains in Figueres or Girona.

We are travelling from Perpignan to Cordoba in a few weeks time - by train.

It has been a nightmare !

French trains go on sale 90 days prior to departure

Spanish trains go on sale 60 days prior to departure (in theory)

As mentioned, a new High Speed line should be open by then. What services will be running in 10 months time ? No one knows.

Our journey is Perpignan to Girona / Girona to Madrid / Madrid to Cordoba.

As expected, the first and last trains went on sale 60 days prior to departure. However, the Spanish Rail website http://www.renfe.com/EN/viajeros/index.html only showed a couple of trains from Girona to Madrid.

We waited and we waited. The train finally went on sale 33 days before departure. No website listed it until then.

My advice, book everything you need to now - flights, hotels etc. There will be trans. It will be possible to get between the two - but you won't know until 60 days (possibly less) before the train goes.

No guarantee of course, but it now looks as if the railway companies are gearing up to start the new services from the date of the European timetable change, i.e. 15th December.

If this does go ahead it should end the uncertainty that has plagued the Franco-Spanish route throughout this year, and the un-nervingly short booking windows.

Rumour certainly has it that the direct Paris - Barcelona trains (via Perpignan) will start on December 15th and that other routes eg Toulouse - Barcelona and perhaps even Geneva - Barcelona will be introduced during 2014.

News about the first reproduced here from the excellent www.seat61.com site

"Direct TGVs Paris-Barcelona at last, from 15 December???

If you run an enquiry on the French version of voyages-sncf.com, you'll see direct TGVs between Paris and Barcelona have been loaded on dates after the timetable change on 15 December, although they are not yet bookable. Assuming this isn't some test or glitch, it looks as if that's the date when these services will finally start. Fastest journey seems to be just 6h16 - compared to a total of 4 hours or more by air. It's not yet known what will happen to Elipsos after 15 December."
