Nimes 2012 at Feria des Vendanges week

Next year we were planning to stay in Nimes for a few days around the 3rd weekend in September, however we now understand that this time will coincide with Feria des Vendanges.

We are from New Zealand and we just want to experience a smallish french village while on TGV route to Barcelona. During this weekend we imagine that Nimes won't be the usual everyday Nimes and that accomodation prices will by much higher than usual. Is that correct?

Should we plan to base ourselves in Avignon or one of the other towns to the south along the TGV line?

Thank you

Both Nimes and Avignon are large towns/cities with well over or close to 100.000 inhabitants. Will you be looking for a village or a smaller town ? A smallish French village will not be served by the TGV, but you may find smaller towns with train connections.

Do some research on this.

Take the TGV to Nimes

Take a bus to Sommieres

Stay Sommieres

Take a bus to Montpellier

Continue on the trip with a TGV from Montpellier

Sommieres is a typical French medieval village. The first bus meanders through the vaunage passing vineyards and olive groves. The second bus meanders through old farming villages. If you have the option to stay another night in Montpellier, I would take it.

We went to the Nimes Feria in June last year and whilst it was very busy in the evenings it was ok during the day until about 3pm with plenty of room to look around the fountains. temple etc. You may even enjoy the party! Montpelier is nearby where you can visit Nimes from too.

The feria is a busy time in Nimes, but people pick and choose where to go, what to do and not get caught up in the feria unless they want to. Last year, for example, we drove in specially for the water jousting on the canal, which isn't normally seen in NImes, but at places such as Sète, had lunch afterwards and left. It was pretty quiet apart from around the canal, with the feria celebrations taking place in the area around the arènes in the afternoon and on into the small hours.

But it's also the weekend of European Heritage Days, when visits to buildings which aren't always available to the public open their doors. Many of these make great visits, but it does add to the number of people visiting.

However, Nimes is a big place, as are Avignon and Montpellier. If you want smaller place, you'll need to take a bus from wherever you choose to take the TGV to. There are so many to choose from; maybe you'll enjoy a bustling Saturday market, such as at Sommières or Uzès, both interesting small towns with plenty to do and see. Some heritage buildings will also be open that weekend in smaller towns and villages. Or maybe you'd prefer somewhere even smaller, with little happening, just to wind down.

A lot depends on what you're hoping to do, what your interests are.

I advise you to stop north Nimes in Uzes (stop at the railway station in Nimes and then continue to Uzes (30 mn ) by bus.

Uzès is really a nice city, well preserved and beloved by English!!!! so you will feel at home!

on Saturday morning you have a "provencal" market with fruits, olive oil, fisch....which really worth the visit.

But being so close to Nimes without visiting the city, it's a pity. you can admire the roman amphitheater and also a well preserved roman temple- so if you can stop a few hours in Nimes even if it's going to be very buzy because of the Feria!

Just checked the official website and it states the Feria des Vendanges will be on 13th-16th September. The Les Arenes website states that it is open everyday except ferias and shows. Does this mean that it will be closed the whole weekend of the 13th-16th September then?

We want to visit the arena, but don't want to attend a bullfighting event to do that.

Would appreciate any advice.
