Nice - Nimes - Barcelona

If we left nice around 9am-10am how long to Nimes, is there a hop on hop off bus that takes you around the sites or is it easy walking. How far to the viaduct on the bus.

We only have half of the day ( Ithink) we leave the next morning for Barcelona, how long on the train we have eurail tickets do we have to reserve seats to Barcelona ?

Does everyone agree this is a good half way stop from Nice to Barcelona.

Cheers from aussie babyboomer backpackers !!

Nimes from Nice is a journey of between 4 and 5 hours! Nimes is well worth it, more history than is good for a place.

Most of the sites in Nimes can easily be reached on foot, but which viaduct do you mean?

Yes reservation is essential for the direct fast trains to Barcelona. These start from Montpellier, so you have a long journey ahead of you. If you choose these trains you should reserve as far in advance as possible as whenever I use them they seem to be fairly full.

It is also possible to do the journey by slow local trains, no reservation needed.

Train from Nimes at 1113am, arrive Port Bou 1428, change for the Barcelona train which leaves at 1559 arriving there at 1839. These are slow local trains, no reservations, less expensive than the fast trains but Port Bou Station is a dire place to have to wait for over an hour!

Alternative, using the afternoon fast train, Nimes leave 1418 arrive Perpignan 1625, change for direct train to Barcelona arrive 1959. If you don't mind getting up really early, Nimes 0636 to Montpellier arrive 0716, change there for the Barcelona train which leaves at 0726 arriving in Barcelona at 1146. Those are the only two direct trains in daytime from that area of France to Barcelona.

Hope that helps.

Hello Albufeira,Thank you for all that great advice, all the times etc, I think we will get the fast train and try and book a reservation as it is a long way.

Do we need to book reservation from Nimes to Montpellier if we get that early 6.25 train.

Sorry I did mean the aquaduct some say you can get a bus from behind the railway station but we do not know how long this takes there and back.

I do not think we will have time as we do want to see the arena etc in Nimes. We will probably collapse into bed to be up so early for the train.

Can we get breakfast on the go at the staion or nearby do you think.

Sorry for all the questions, you have been so helpful

Cheers Viv
