Montpellier for a few days - getting there and car hire

Hi,

We are looking to stay in Montpellier for a few days we have a 2 yr old daughter. Following maybe a 2-3 day stay there we would like to rent a car to drive along the coast to Italy, Switzerland and ten back to Lyon.

Can you please suggest where is best to rent a car from? Paris or Montpellier? Also, is the TGV from Paris offering any visual benefits or is it just as convenient to get a flight to MOntpellier?

Thanks,

If you will be flying into Paris, an onward flight to Montpellier would make sense. If you are arriving by Eurostar, you would do best to go by train. A train from Paris Gare de Lyon take about 3.5 hours. Getting from central Paris to central Montpellier by flying would take about 5 hours.

There will be no problem picking up a rental car in Montpellier. AutoEurope is a reputable agency that arranges cheap rentals with the major companies: www.auto-europe.co.uk

Fly direct from the UK to Montpellier (MPL) and rent a car at the airport. EasyJet fly from London Gatwick.

The TGV from Paris is too fast to see anything.

Thank you for the replies.

We are flying in to Paris from Stockholm, and want to spend maybe 2 days in Paris seeing the sites. We have a 2 yr old with us and so will need a car seat as well - in the process of trying to figure out if its better to bring ours along or just rent one with the car.

The plan is to get to Montpellier - considering the train because its fast, never been on a TGV and because we have plenty of driving to do during the rest of stay as we would plan to drive through French coast to Italy and up to Switzerland and then back to France to fly out.

Debating flying from Lyon or Geneva. Will need to return the car and would be better to return to French territory to avoid international one way drop charges. I did do a search just now and seems even a montpellier to lyon drop was going to cost 350 Euros??? Is that correct?

Regarding Montpellier - any suggestions on what to see, where to stay cheaply and if its better to rent the car when we leave rather than when we get there?

Thanks!

A pickup in Montpellier and drop off in Lyon should not cost anything like €350. One-way rental fees within France are normally either cheap or zero. Have you looked at www.auto-europe.co.uk ?

NO, a 350 euro drop fee within France is completely abnormal.

I am looking at auto-europe right now... it says they will notify if there is a drop fee and that i can cancel for free . Shall I try to make a booking and then if it comes up with a fee like the 350 euro or something silly like that (some other site cant remember which now) I can just cancel as the travel is in May.

Also, for a trip driving along from Montpellier to Italy, up to Lichtenstein, down again through Switzerland to France with a 2 yr old, 1 big and 2 small *(carry on size) suitcases along with a pushchair/stroller and a baby carrier. what kind of car would you recommend from;

Renault Scenic - 5 passenger - driven Renault before - generally spacious. would it be a good choice for winding up and down roads, sharp bends etc?

Lancia Delta - looks fancy but no idea about this car performance or space wise.

Audi A4 - Saloon - not really sure about this one

Peugeot 3008 - can't tell from the photo on the site but will this have enough boot space? any idea it is on performance for the suggested route?

No, you should pick up the phone and call them.

And you can't pick a particular car. You rent a particular class of car and get what they have on hand the day you pick up.

Is it worth thinking about Nykoping to Beziers with Ryanair, then TGV from, say Lyon, to Paris and fly back Paris Beauvais to Nykoping ?

We've already booked flights from Arlanda to Paris. Will be flying to Prague once we finish our trip to get a bus back to home - Brno. At least thats where home is for now :)
