Etang de Thau is salt water and has much fewer mosquitos than Camargue and the fresh water areas.

I have crossed the Etang de Thau countless times and mosquitoes are not the problem; wind is a problem and the rough ride it brings. Afternoon crossings can be very uncomfortable in a relatively flat bottomed canal boat.

However as mpprh says, mosquitoes are indeed a concern if you are travelling through the Camargue in summer (using the Canal du Rhone a Sete).

I live in Sète by the bassin de Thau and mosquitoes are not a problem in the area. Boating here is fabulous - canals, mediterranean, bassin, fabulous fish and seafood and excellent regional wines.
