How to travel from Montpellier to Chateauneuf-du-pape?

Hello does anyone know if there is public transport from Montpellier to Chateauneuf-du-Pape? I would love to visit the village on a day trip but won't have a car. Also, from Montpellier, do you know any companies who arrange winery tours in a winery where I can sample Chateauneuf-du-Pape? Any other recommendations of winery tours from Montpellier very welcome (where you don't need a car). Are there any IN Montpellier? thanks

Chateauneu de Pape has no train station, and it's just over 100km from Montpellier, so too far for bus service.

Here's the website for the Pays de Provence intercommunal office of tourism:

and the wine page from Montpellier's office of tourism site:

Just about impossible to go all the way by train.and bus I am afraid.

Chateaunuef du Pape is about 10 miles from Avignon, which is also the nearest railway station with direct service from Montpellier. There is a station closer at Sorgues about 5 miles away but connections aren't all that good.

It takes around an hour to travel from Montpellier to Avignon Centre on the very infrequent local trains. Unfortunately, most of the trains are TGV, which dump you at the out of town TGV station from where they put you on a bus to get to the centre.

Check times etc at www.voyages-sncf.com

Now the problem. There is one bus a day from Avignon to Chateauneuf du Pape - at 630pm. From Orange (a few minutes more up the line from Avignon there are two buses a day but the last one back is at 1315. (I am not counting the buses that only run on schooldays, which in any case come into town in the mornings and go back in the afternoons.)

Bus times for what they are worth at

vaucluse.fr/…par12054

Lignes 2.2 and 2.3

A taxi from Avignon Centre or TGV stations to the final destination looks like the only way.

I trust that helps.

Thanks for your help, guys. Really useful information. I think I'm gonna skip Chateauneuf- and just do the local wineries in Montpellier. Sounds like too much hassle. And there is wonderful wine all around!
