Traveling from Madrid to Montpellier - Recommendations?

Hello All -

I am a non-french speaker studying in Madrid and looking to visit a friend in Montpellier Nov 5-8. Can anyone help with suggestions on transportation methods and routes? Should I use Spanish or French companies? A mixture of trains/buses?

Thanks for your advice and time -

Cheers,

Andrea

You could fly Easyjet from Madrid to Paris CDG or Toulouse. The most sensible in this case would be out to Paris CDG (early morning flight)and TGV from CDG to Montpellier and return from Toulouse to Madrid (afternoon flight) with connecting train from Montpellier. Due to ongoing strikes both trains and flights might be affected or cancelled.

Check Ryanair flights direct to either Marseille or Girona, then train to Montpellier.

www.frogbus.com goes Girona airport to Perpignan.

Train from Madrid Atocha station to Barcelona then the train from there to Montpellier (strikes permitting of course) - two direct journeys each day Barcelona to Montpellier, reservation required. There are several other journey options using slower non reservable (but cheaper) trains available between Barcelona and Montpellier changing at the border.

Overall about 8 or 9 hours journey.

The suggestion of flying to Marseille is a good one. Marseille is only about 1hr 45 minutes from Montpellier by train, plus the time it takes to get out of the airport and into the city of course.

The direct trains between Barcelona and Montpellier have not been running for weeks due to the ongoing strikes.

TALGO de jour (France / Espagne) : Aucune circulation -this has been the situation for quite long now.
