Montpellier to Barcelona in 3 days

We will be hiring a car and make our way from Montpellier to Barcelona in about 3/3.5 days. On the way we would like to stop in and stay in small French towns/villages. Recommended stops, places to stay and itineraries much appreciated. Thanks!

Lots of possibilities but before we get into those are you aware that dropping a French rental in Spain will result in heavy repatriation fees, possibly into the hundreds of €uros? Or did you intend to return to France after visiting Barcelona?

Check out the point about rental car drop offs. There are options - if you need to leave the car in Spain, use Frogbus from Perpignan to Girona (60kms and 30 mins from the border) then rent from there. Or train from Perpignan to Figueres.

Montpellier - Barcelona by the highway is 3 hrs.

Montpellier - Barcelona via the coast road from Perpignan to Llanca and Figueres is 5 hrs.

Montpellier - Andora - Barcelona is 7 hrs using the available highways.

You won,'t have a time problem, but you need to make some more decisions : do you prefer coast, plain or mountain scenery ? What time of year will you be travelling ? Any interest in Spanish towns/villages ?

Actually, our trip is next week - We will be in Montpellier 17 Jan. We are really happy with any scenery, we just want a couple days to relax somewhere pretty... obviously we aren't big planners, but I feel like it would be good to have some direction, so any advice is appreciated. The three days are just for French towns, our itinerary is sort of set for the Spanish side.

Thanks!

You could use Narbonne as a base and visit Carcassonne and the Cathar Castles, then take the coastal road to Spain via Collioure, Banyuls and Cerbere.

Yes, I've read good things about this area, and was thinking of getting to Carcassone, Perignan (probably to return the car) and Collioure. Do you have any recommendations about accommodations?

Thanks again!

You will be happy to know that we currently have snow on the ground !

I wouldn't worry - it normally doesn't stay longer than 24 hrs, although we've had cold weather and it has only partly melted after 3 days. And if you are really lucky, you could be eating outdoors at 20C.

If there is still snow about, you can stick to the major roads that are well cleared.

You don't need to worry about reserving hotels at this time of year, but some of the very remote places could be closed for annual holidays.

So - a rural trip through rolling countryside with history and attractive villages followed by the most attractive part of the coast could be Montpellier - Lodeve - Millau - Rodez - Albi - Carcassonne - Narbonne - Perpignan - Collioure - Llanca - - Figueres - Barcelona. Choose where you want to stop (or miss completely) as you go !

Some places to research :

Most beautiful villages in France -

Aude

*Lagrasse

Pyrénées Orientales

*Castelnou

*Eus

*Evol

*Mosset

*Villefranche-de-Conflent

Herault

*Minerve

*Olargues

*Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert

The canal du midi and Carcassonne are both Unesco world heritage sites.

Perpignan, Ceret, the French coast villages and Figueres have artistic connections including the Dali museum in Figueres (closed Mondays and his house at Port Llegat closed for winter).

Empuria Brava has Phoenician, Greek and Roman cities in the course of excavation. There is a small museum.

"The canal du midi and Carcassonne are both Unesco world heritage sites."

So are Villefranche de Conflent and Mont-Louis, further up in the mountain.
