Collioure and young families - would you recommend?

We are considering 2 weeks in Collioure. We have a 4 year old and 18-month old.

Is Collioure a child friendly place? We don't want Kids Clubs and that stuff but is the town easy to get about, restaurants welcoming and beaches kid friendly?

If anyone can recommend a good apartment with access to a pool (heated ideally as it will be September) that would be great.

In September the sea is at its warmest. I very much doubt you'll need a heated pool.

Lots of families spend their holiday in Collioure and I have never heard anyone mention the town was not "child friendly" - the concept does not really exist in France. If your children behave, there won't be any problem.

The town is not very big and is easy to get about - unless you are located up hill - in which case it might be difficult with small children

Gareth - did you end up going to Collioure? We've booked for next August and I'd be interested to hear what you thought?

hi - no we didn't make it in the end. But we do have friends who we've since found out holiday there regularly with children and enjoy it.

If you really require a heated swimming pool, you might have to compromise on location. We stayed at the Maison Frere in September 2011. 150m2 apartment right in the middle of town, near everything. We travelled with our (then) 3 yearold and 6 month old. The children loved it: the beach, castle, playground and carousel and it felt very safe. The apartment didn't have access to heated pool though...

We are planning to go back.

KazzabobWanta - We have had several holidays in Collioure- usually in low season and around Easter time. We travel nowadays just as a couple. There are always families about and one of the things we have always liked about France is the way families with children of all ages are received in restaurants. Eating out as a family is very much a part of French life.

It could be quite hot in August and I know from other people - very much more crowded than we have known it.

But it is a picturesque place with a lovely harbour overlooked by a castle and there are larger beaches on either side of the town.
