Cutting trees along the Canal du Midi

We will be discovering the Canal in August. What is the current state of the tree-cutting operation? Which are the worst affected areas? So sad...

Thanks.

I personally do not have any updates but I believe that all of the trees will eventually be removed.

In the local newspaper a few months ago it was stated that all the trees will have to be cut down, as once the fungus affecting them takes hold in a tree it will die in a few years.

The plan is to replace the plane trees that line the banks from Toulouse to Etang de Thau. From this year they plan to cut down 4,000 diseased trees a year and replant with good-sized trees that are immune to the fungus. It's an enormous undertaking and very expensive; it's expected that it will take place over 10-15 years and cost over 200 million €. Fundraising has been taking place as has a big publicity campaign to educate people about the importance of this huge expensive project to preserve the beauty of this popular area.

While they are doing this, maybe they could do something about all the boats discharging their raw sewage into the canals. Since they are concerned with the beauty of the area, it would be better to introduce legislation now to prevent this practice, and not after someone falls ill.

This trip along the Canal du Midi has been one on my bucket list for many years. I and family members shall be travelling from Le Somail to Carcassonne return at end of May 2014 for 10 days so will update on situation on this blog re the trees after the trip. Hoping it won't detract too much from the experience!

The law is in place, no way to enforce it. You likely have not heard of illness because of the huge volume of water that moves through the canal.

Aside from the tree cutting the next worse offender is the pilot of the boat, the speed is not enforced and the banks of the canal takes a beating.. Also no wake is not enforced , but is a simple consideration to other parked boats.
