Paris to Carcassone by train

We are hoping to visit Carcassone in May and really enjoy train journeys. I have spent quite some time on the web trying to find out the best way to get from Paris to Carcassone by train but cannot seem to find relevant information. Is there any-one who could help please?

The train journey from Paris to Carcassonne will take about 7.5 hours. If you book when tickets go on sale (3 months before travel), you may get a ticket for €35. Wait until shortly before travel, and the full price is €124.

You can get train times and costs, and make bookings, in English at www.tgv-europe.com/en but use Antarctic as the "Ticket collection country" in the first screen to avoid being transferred to RailEurope, which has higher prices and does not list all the trains. For notes on online booking, see www.nickbooth.id.au/Tips/FrenchTrain.htm

Currently there are several daily trains, the quickest journey being 5hrs and 20 minutes including a change of train in Nimes. The only direct train takes nearly eight hours.

French Railways do not publish generic timetables on-line for their long distance routes. You can only see the times when tickets go on sale, ie the 90 days ahead mentioned above.

However, if you wish to see the likely times, go to www.reiseauskunft.bahn.de which has train times for the whole of Europe available in several languages.

You won't be able to book tickets there, but at least you can get an idea of when the trains run. Trains leave from Paris Gare de Lyon.

It's worth checking on the SNCF website: http://www.sncf.com/fr/. As others have said, tickets go on sale three months in advance. When we lived in the UK, we found the Rail Europe people very helpful on the phone, and if you are coming from the UK, they might be doing a decent price on a London/Paris/Carcassonne trip.

Many months later, this thread has been useful. Planning a family barging trip that starts in Carcassone.

Thanks. Australia is nearly as far as Antarctica! I'll book 3 months in advance of our departure in early August.

A new website for French train tickets has come along sinced this thread started.

www.capitainetrain.com is a bona-fide site approved and linked to the SNCF reservation systems, same tickets and same prices without the undesired redirections to other sites.

Would love to hear how your barge trip went. We are thinking of a self piloting boat trip on the du Midi in that area. Your thoughts would be appreciated.
