Versailles to Lyon

Would it be at all feasible/advisable to travel by train to Lyon after spending the day at Versailles? We will be staying in Versailles the previous night, thus getting an early start at the Palace. We know we would be going back thru Paris. Is this plan at all workable?

It is certainly possible. On the current timetable, the last train from Paris Gare de Lyon leaves at 20.57, arriving at Lyon Part Dieu at 22.56. If you do not have too much luggage, the easiest way of getting to Gare de Lyon would be to take the RER back into Paris, get off at Gare d'Austerlitz, and walk across the Seine.

For the best prices on train travel, book direct with the operator as far ahead as possible. Tickets go on sale 3 months before travel, and the cheapest tickets often sell out quickly. Discounted ticket prices keep going up as the travel date gets closer.

You can get train times and costs, and make bookings, at en.voyages-sncf.com/en but use Antarctic at the "Ticket collection country" to avoid being transferred to RailEurope USA, which has higher prices and does not list all the trains.

If you have trouble with voyages-sncf, www.capitainetrain.com is a private website which links directly to the SNCF ticketing system.
