Picnic at Versailles

One guide book suggested having a picnic when visiting Versailles.

Once one passes the entry point is there a location where one can check one's picnic food while one visits the palace?

Also suggestions, if this is possible, where one should have a picnic?

No -- food is not allowed in the palace, and the last time I was there, there was a sign saying that they would not check picnic coolers at the check rooms.

So...you could visit the grounds first, or stop and buy a sandwich to go at any of the lunch counters (there are multiple restaurants and snack bars throughout the gardens at various price levels) or you could leave the grounds, walk into Versailles and buy something and bring it back.

Another poster said they got 2 sandwiches and 2 hot chocolates at the Angelina's there for 20 euros -- so it's not too outrageously priced

We plan to arrive a few minutes before the Palace opens on Saturday, 9 July so that we can see the palace and then view the fountains which will opeate from 11:00 to 12:00 and then 14:30 t0 17:30.

Does anyone have a suggesstion for a quick place for lunch at 12:00 before going to the Marie Antionette section of the gounds or the Grand Trianon?
