Les Journées du Patrimoine - Guided visits and pourboires ?

Hello;

I've reserved a place on the guided tour of the Gare de Lyon and I've just had a thought concerning pourboires.

It's a long time since I've done a guided tour of anything so I have no idea of the amount I maybe should be giving to the guide.

Do you give them anything and if so how much do you reckon ?

Thank you in advance :))

I have yet to even have someone even hint that a pourboire was obligatory.

Neither have I but I read about people suggesting 10€ or more for the free tours that they have around Paris so I thought maybe it's "done".

It would be bad form to tip for this event. The people leading your tours are not tour guide, but employees, and often specialists in very interesting fields. They're salaried employees. Except outside Paris where private estates are open. In that case your guides are likely to be landed gentry. You could end up tipping a baron !

And sometimes they are actually employees... of the site you are visiting. It's basically the case for all the sites that are places of work, be they ministries or private companies. So, it would be even more odd to tip the "guides", indeed. (don't worry, they are being paid extra for that Sunday work by their administration or company)

Not only are these people employees, but they are earning double salary and compensatory time!

It s not so easy to be a one shot guide and those guys would rather préfer be visitons than guide so i think we should tip them

Said I didn't do guided tours often ... last time was in August 1986 at the Château de Malmaison and everybody tipped and the guide muttered over the amount

Now I see that they have audio guides over there so the pb wouldn't arise.

The country visits that we have done in previous years sometimes accepted donations for the up keep of the place, renovations and whatnot but it goes without saying that we would never try and leave a cash in hand tip with such hosts. ;))
