How to address an envelope

How do you write the name on an envelope such as:

Mr. and Mrs. John Smith

Would it be Mons. et Mme. John Smith?

1. Re: How to address an envelope

M. and Mme. Smith is correct

(not sure about the political correct issues here - I WOULDNT use just the man's name! EVER! if anything, if you know the people well you could just say Jean and Marie Smith, for example)

I totally agree, sets my teeth on edge when I see a woman (usually an older one who prefers it) as:

Mrs. John Smith (yikes!)

But for something formal, such as an invitation, you should address it as Mr. and Mrs., Dr. and Mrs., Drs., etc. That's the way it is.

How about:

ABC Corporation

attn: M et Mme Smith

21 Chemin des Ardennes

68100 Mulhouse

???

Is this the way it all goes?

Thanks.

But how about:

Restaurant Chez Gusteau

attn: Monsieur et Madame Ratatouille,

24 rue de l'Univers

75002 PARIS

Is "attn:" used properly here?

la photographe: like yours best. But what is the correct way to do it, would you not use a first name? For formal addresses, I don't mind it coming to Mr. and Mrs. John Smith, if it's something to just me, then Mrs. Mary Smith or just Mary Smith, if it's a casual invite, then Mary and John Smith. But I just wonder what a French etiquette book says. Thanks for the replies!

Yes, Etiquette ( very formal way) is Monsieur et Madame Jacques Dubois. Very few people do that today as of course women do not approve of this.
