How much $ should I budget for trip?

Hi!

We live in Sicily and plan to take about a 5 day trip in/around Paris beg. of August. I know this is not the greatest time to go but we have no choice and have to fit it in to my husband's work schedule. At any rate, we should be able to get decent costs on airfare since we are already in Sicily for the time being.

I am trying to even have a remote guesstimate on how much to start to plan/budget for a 5 day trip in Paris? I'm wanting to do this as cheap as possible while still enjoying the important things in Paris. I am open to staying in a B&B or apartment.. eating cheaper (but good food). It's important to me to hit the Louve, Orsay, atleast see the Eiffel Tower, do a Sienne river cruise, possibly Giverny, Versailles. My husband also wants to see the Normandy beaches.

We will have a 3 year old and 1.5 year old; however my parents are meeting us there so that for the adult-only things we can split up.

I am not even sure where to begin.. just thought I'd see if any one had any tips on figuring all of this out!!! Thanks :)

I don't know if this will help, but it might get you started. My girlfriend and I were in Paris for 8 days recently, and spent about 2100 Euros (not including airfare), including 855 Euros on hotel. So if you take out the lodging, we were spending about 150 Euros a day - generally 40 Euros breakfast/lunch/snacks, and 60 Euros dinner, with the rest going toward the activities of the day. That also includes 120 Euros for two 6-day Paris Museum Passes, which you might not want, and you definitely won't want for that long (you'll have to figure out the cost/benefits for you). This allowed us to do everything you say you want to see in Paris, and more. We didn't do a trip to Normandy, but did look into it - if you go with an organized tour from Paris, it's going to be fairly expensive, if I remember right.

Hope that helps you get started.

Paris is very doable for 150 euros a day depending on food. If you can eat cheaply and then save for a big meal in the evening you should be ok. We buy a museum pass and also in the past a CArte Orange. I know the CArte Orange ahs been replaced and I will have to figure that out next time we go. Five days in Paris and trying a side trip or 2 is alot to accomplish. I would maybe do Versailles or Normandy but not both. When you get to Paris you will see that 5 days can be spent there alone and still leave so much to see. Have you been toParis? I would suggest you add the Rodin museum and the l'Orangerie to your list.

Also, we are planning a trip to Italy and Sicily in 2009. My husbands grandfather was from Sicily. Salaparuda to be exact.

Hi Val,

There are definitely ways to see Paris less expensively.

For your Siene River Cruise, if you just want to be on a boat on the Seine, buy a ticket for the Batobus. It's a hop-on, hop-off boat that stops at 11 or 12 major sites. I think the daily ticket price is about 13 Euro...far less than a 'cruise' on the Seine.

Wifh five days, I don't see how you can possibly see much in Paris and add Giverny, Versailles and Normandy. Those three side trips will already take up three of your five days. If you must do a side trip, choose one, unless Paris itself doesn't hold much attraction for you.

If you choose an apartment, you can easily have breakfast there to save some money. You'll also have a bit more room for your little ones.

Go to a supermarket and pick up food items for picnics.

The best views of the Eiffel Tower are at the Trocadero...accessible by metro.

Something else to think about is transportation. We absolutely love the Paris metro system, (one whiff upon arrival and we know we're IN Paris!!!) but you may have an issue with your little ones. There are a lot of stairs, up and down and up and down, etc. etc. Difficult for adults, more difficult with small children and strollers. Perhaps someone will have some advice on that for you.

Notre Dame is free. Behind the cathedral is a wonderful play area for the children. (Also free).

If you'll email me, I'll be happy to send you my Paris notes. They're fairly extensive and they have some money saving tips and tricks, along with a section on Paris with children.

My email address is vickisfloyd@hotmail.com

Enjoy planning...

Everyone has their own personal budget thresholds. How much would you budget for a visit to Rome for the same period ?? That should be about right for Paris.

There is only one hard and firm rule about travel---take half the clothes you think yoi may need...and twice the money.

Thank you all so much for your replies.

We can definitely extend it to 7 days or so if we have more to do. I am in the beginning stages of planning and not even sure all there *is* to do. Before I got toooo knee deep in research I wanted to see if it was feasible. 150 euro a day sounds reasonable for eats, etc. I'm going to print out all of these responses--- I really appreciate it!! I'm sure I'll have more Q's soon :)

I should also add--

We are not very well traveled in Europe. So far we have seen most of Sicily and we did a 11 night Med Cruise last summer. The metros were sort of annoying with kids and the stroller but we are pretty good about backpacking the little one when necessary. I figure if we can make it through a day at the Vatican we can probably do Paris. Atleast I'm hoping. ;)

If you are extending it to 7 days rent an apartment. You will have more room and you can eat in some meals. It is worth it with a family.
