Christmas time in Paris

Hi!

I am going to spend 3 days in Paris during Christmas. We are going to arrive on Monday 24th Dec at around 11am. As Christmas is a funny time of the year for shops etc shall I expect any difficulties getting basic food etc. The hotel we are staying in only has a breakfast bar and then we are pretty much on our own. I am planning to book a child-friendly restaurant for Xmas lunch on 25th December but what should I expect on Christmas Eve and then 26th December. Are litlle bistros, coffee shops, bakeries open or shut during these festivedays?

Many thanks

Claudia

Hi, I don't really "know" anything, but we're going for Christmas too so I've done some research here. Doing a search here for Christmas brings up some tips. As far as I can tell, and maybe an expert will correct me here, big chains and high tourist eateries are often open. Hotel restaurants are a good bet. And the Marais is the old Jewish quarter and has a great reputation for food from all over, so that might be a good area to try.

I've heard that Dec 24 is as bad for closings, if not worse, than Dec 25 as the French do family dinners on the 24th. I hope I'm correct in my research and have a great trip.

I just phoned 4 restaurants I've chosen to try and all of them are closed during Christmas. I am slightly worried now but will keep trying. If anyone out there would like to recommend a place to eat on Christmas Eve/ Day I would greatly appreciate the help.

Yes a lot of restaurants will be closed on 25th. And those open for Christmas Eve will have expensive special menus. Bakeries will be also be closed. But you may find a few bistros open, especially in touristic areas : around Notre-Dame, around Beaubourg / les Halles for example.

I recommend that you choose ethnic food restaurants, most will be open. There are a lot of good indian, thai, vietnamese, etc restaurants all over Paris. Usually kids like exotic food.

You may go to rue de la Montagne Sainte Geneviève / rue de l'Ecole Polytechnique, I am sure you will find nice places to eat. There are very exotic places there, food from Tibet or Ethiopie.

Hi!

I'm going to spend 5 days in Paris with my boyfriend for Christmas, from the 22nd to the 26th of december. I thought there was not problem at all for the 24th and 25th but now I have some doubts reading these notes in the forum...Maybe in the toursit areas there wont have any problem to find an open restaurant or bar, if nnot for sure in the hotels will have their restaurants open! I'll check it out.

Do you know if the monuments will have a special opening time for this period?

Thanks a lot! Merci! :)

Pretty much every monument is closed for Christmas except the Eiffel Tower. Some are closed Christmas Eve, but mostly just the ones that are closed on Monday anyway. We'll probably all see each other there. By the way, this is an extra bummer because the Museum Pass is NOT suspended for a day just because nothing is open.

We had reservations (which we're cancelling) for LaCiel at the top of Montparnasse Tower for Christmas. They have a 100E set menu. We decided to reserve with P'tit Troquet based on all the good comments here. It's a 50E set menu. I don't know about any others but I would say you get about the same type of closure you'd find in the US. Not everything open, but stick to chains or word cuisine and you're bound to find something.
