I've done this a number of times and never had a serious line at the Terminal RER station -- it is equivalent to riding the metro (except extra zones of course)

The RER station at T-2 is actually at/inside the terminal. The RER station for T-1 and T-3 is shared by both, and that is the one you want. Word is you can walk the 400 meters from the RER to the T-3 terminal.

Lines are not long at RER ticket windows. You can buy the tickets at any time while in Paris, not just the day you use them.

If I get it well, you want to buy your tickets TO CDG IN Paris, right? In this case, no problem, any métro station will do. Just try to avoid the first working day of the month, it's amazing to see how many Parisians still wait for the last moment to buy their carte orange coupon !

Yes, strangely enough, the closest terminal to RER stop T1 is... T3 (5 mn by foot).

On the other hand, when you are arriving from, say, the UK, in T3 and want to take the RER, it is rather difficult to avoid the queue, since non French credit cards don't work in automatic machines. Maybe these machines accept Euro notes, I don't know, someone might be able to comment on this. Because otherwise the queues at the manned selling booths are very long.
