Red Light District And Young Children?

Hi Guys,

My wife and I are looking to book a hotel not too far from the Boulevard de Clichy with our 3 year old. We have read some reviews that say this area is not appropriate for children due to the strip clubs/sex shops.

My question is, is it really that inappropriate and to what extent? We don't plan on walking up and down the whole street but my need to walk through small parts.

Thankyou

This can't be a serious question!? I really cannot think of anything on the Boulevard de Clichy that would be dangerous or even shocking to a three year old. As best I can recall there are no child-eating trolls hiding in doorways anyplace in Paris. The worst thing I can think of that might occur with an older kid would be for he/she to ask, "What is that funny battery operated thing in the window, Daddy?"

The area is only inappropriate for a certain type of puritanical adult. It's rapidly gentrifying for want of a better phrase and a perfectly suitable area to stay in Paris. Reviewers who say it's not suitable for kids really mean it's their own shock horror as kids couldn't care less. Kudos for having such an in step 3 year old versed in city life. Seriously, you are worrying over nothing.

There are several schools around there. As long as you don't let the 3-year old wander off by herself (which you wouldn't do anywhere in the world), you'll all be okay.

Pigalle still has some sex shops that are mostly in decline, due to the Internet and changes in the neighborhood. They are not a problem for young children because young children do not care about sex and there's nothing in the shop windows that would attract a kid's attention.

Actually I think the coolest stores in the area from a kid's standpoint are the various music and audio stores that sell musical instruments and professional audio equipment. There are also some stores selling cheap electronic gadgets and similar items.

First off....its not a red light district. Its a street with some adult clubs and shops.

The OP said he was staying not far from bvd de Clichy.... not on it. Our usual hotel is less than 300 metres from bvd de Clichy but you would never know it. You only have to travel 50 meters up rue Lepic and the sex shops are gone and you are in a vibrant market street heading up to the equally wonderful rue des Abbesses. 50 metres south of bvd de Clichy and you are into the less touristy but more genuine 9th.

Perhaps the OP could state exactly where their hotel is?

You are reading very outdated information. Yes, there is a cluster of adult shops and their signage is unambiguous, but they're no worse than the Soho (London) equivalent, nor indeed the 'adult entertainment' shop thousands of people walk past each day as they exit Brighton station. The true 'red light' work is totally undercover since the law changed in 2016 to criminalise customers, and you will not be aware of it in this area unless you're staying in an apartment next to a worker.

I suspect your toddler will enjoy the bright lights without understanding the words.

My main supermarket, Monoprix, is on Place Blanche. I get off the Montrobus at Pigalle and walk along the footpaths either side of Blvd de Clichy. There are lots of sex shops but their window displays actually look like pharmacy ones. I have actually stopped and checked them out and there's nothing that a littlie will understand. I'm an lol (little old lady) and I didn't see anything shocking or disturbing and I've led a very sheltered life!

Not familiar with the area, however a 3 year old child is too young and therefore immune to smut. On a positive note, the accommodation in vicinity of sex shops and brothels, generally offered at more affordable rates.

What is the hotel? You can get specific feedback of you indicate the name of the place you’re considering booking. Is it below Bl Clichy in the 9th? Is it in Montmartre itself?

Montmartre is hilly. So if your toddler will be walking (or you’ll be pushing a stroller), that might be inconvenient.

Anyway, there are many things to consider— not just proximity to strip clubs, etc. You can get recs for restaurants, tips for bus and metro and the like if we know where you’re staying

That didn't stop you having a strong opinion about the area back in 28th February when you said:-

"I am planning to skip Moulin Rouge and go to Lido instead merely because Moulin Rouge is located in rough area filled with pornography and prostitution"

...... and that was before you had even set foot in Paris.
