Wine from Paris

Can wine be purchased and shipped to the US there? More specifically to California.

I can't speak definitively on this point, but I am a serious wine lover, and here's my rationale. Usually the "good" wine costs at least as much there, usually more, than it would in the States. Even if it was less per bottle, the shipping costs would be prohibitively expensive, with no assurance that shipping conditions would be conducive to the wine. Next one would have to pay duty on amounts over $400 (or is it $800). Particularly with the current state of the dollar, if the wine is really that good, it can be bought here more cheaply than in France.

If I've got to have it, I only bring one or two bottles home, and those I carry with me on the plane.

I believe that CA permits out of state shipments of wine into the state. There are many states that do not permit it, so the answer would be no to your question if you lived in one of those states.

YES...wine can be purchased in Paris and shipped to the US BUT...you should be aware that there will be SUBSTANTIAL shiiping charges and that you will probably find yourself involved with US Customs duty charges aa well as federal and perhaps state taxes added to this. YOu may find that unless it is a small vinyard with no US distributor, it may be cheaper to order it through your local liquor dealer...or on the internet.

Thanks for the info. Probably will be happy with tasting there and finding it here later.

I was just in Champagne and Burgundy. My husband and I brought home a case of wine. We packed it in five different suitcases (four carryons and one checked). Now, we very carefully declared that we had champagne. There was no place to put how much, but we declared we had it. As we went though customs? I was telling everyone openly that I was having a grand party with all my wines and the Customs staff wanted to be invited. No question about how much I had even though they were x-raying and seeing how much I had I presume. I had no problem bringing it home. And we were not the only ones. Many others had gone to Champage area and all were excitedly talking about their champagne.

When we went tasting we specifically asked which wines we COULD not find in the States. This is how we determined which ones to buy. If you can get it at Cost Plus, then don't buy it there. But if it is unique and not available here, then I would make the choice to bring it home.

It was heavy. And a lot of work. But now that we are home we are treasuring every single bottle.

That is my recent experience from 2 weeks ago. I had read on Trip Advisor that others did the same. All I can say is that the wines we were bringing were so important to us (since we could not get elsewhere) that we would have paid whatever charges Customs had put on us - but they were really only worried about us bringing in cheese or open food.
