1st time! What is your favorite thing to see or do?

If you only had 1 day in Paris, what is the one thing you have to see or do?

Thanks!

Firstly staying in the 5th (maybe 6th) arrondissement, waliking along the left bank all the way to Eiffel Tower, view Paris from at least 2nd stage and return along the right bank (perhaps with a few detours). To me the Eiffel Tower is essentially Parisian, some little spot inside my heart tells me to go there and every time I marvel at it. Perhaps that is why so many people go there and the queues are so long?

So one thing, Eiffel Tower via the Seine.

Then if time - other sights/sites

In this order of importance for me:

The Louvre, as much as I could see in time available.

L'arc de Triomphe, view from the top is something else over the Etoile.

Rodin's House and gardens - not necessarily the artwork

Notre Dame Cathedral

Ice cream at Berthillon

Sorry toomuch information but then it is Paris, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Can one ever get enough.

If I had only one day I'd draw up a rough plan of where i wanted to walk, take my map and plenty of money for coffees and lunch and I'd just stroll, stopping every now and then for a coffee and a spot of people-watching.

I'd probably visit a couple of old favourites in the Marais, maybe wander to the wine bar on the Pont Neuf (Henri IV) or perhaps La Palette on rue de Seine for lunch.

In the afternoon I'd check out one of the temporary exhibitions in town if there was anything interesting. (There almost always is. Last fall/winter it was the magnificent Titian exhibition at the Palais du Luxembourg.) After all, the museums and monuments will all be there next time...

if there was nothing i wanted to see I'd take the métro to some interesting out-of-the-way area and explore it for a few hours.

And if one day includes a night a really good dinner, who knows where...

The OP specifies "one thing", not a million, Irish.

Well in that case it has to be a visit to Berthillon, Shoesy! For sorbet, bien sûr...

Yes, you can only pick one thing!

I'm a first timer and am curious to know what others "have" to do once in Paris! I'm actually going to be there for 4 nights and we will be seeing most of the common sites, however, I would love to add some unique things to see/do while we are there!

Thank you for your comments, please continue to keep them coming!

like one earlier poster -- if I had just one night my number one priority would be to walk at night along the Seine from the Orsay to Notre Dame and walk around the cathedral at night

you can fit in glace at Berthillon and a drink looking out on the cathedral into that same stroll
