From the helpful posts on these forums, I've gathered that the key to enjoying Corsica is to not be overly ambitious about covering too much territory in a short time. My husband and I will spend our honeymoon in Corsica and Sardinia -- 6 nights on each island, the last week of August (2014) in Corsica and the first week of September in Sardinia. It's our first time in either place. (We speak decent French, for what it's worth.)
We are already booked to arrive into Bastia Airport, and we plan to finish our Corsica stay with at least one night in Bonifacio, because we'll be taking the ferry from Bonifacio to Sardinia. We will have a car, but we don't want to change hotels too often or spend too much time driving; mainly we want peaceful, romantic, rustic surroundings, good food, a sense of cultural discovery. We are on a somewhat tight budget, too. And I'm terrified of risky driving!
If we were to choose between Algajola, Galeria, and Porto as a base -- staying there for 4-5 nights, mainly enjoying beach time and strolling, and taking a couple half-day trips to other villages when we feel like a change of scenery -- which of those three towns is best? I know Galeria is much smaller and may seem boring to some, but I took notice of it because we want to make sure to avoid crowds and to have a real sense of relaxation (we live in Manhattan so we already get far too much excitement on a daily basis :) and the lodging there is cheaper. I was initially captivated by Porto-- the photos just really spoke to me-- but now I'm thinking it seems less convenient to the overall plan, and most likely to give me driving terrors! And I had initially dismissed the Calvi stretch of coast as less "authentic-seeming" ... but now Algajola sounds really convenient, and I'm leaning toward just staying there and keeping things simple. So overall, starting from Bastia airport with a car (but a terrified passenger), and ending in Bonifacio, which of those three towns seems like the best bet as our main base?
And is one day/night in Bonifacio too short? 3-4 nights in one of the towns above and 2-3 nights in Bonifacio is an option.
Thanks in advance for any input...
