Bruges to Tours

Honeymooning this summer and starting off in Bruges. Making our way through Tours for a few days then ending in Paris. The drive from Bruges to Tours is almost 6 hours and I'm looking for a nice town to either have dinner or spend the evening on the way. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you!

Wishing you a happy tour. There are many towns that you have to cross in your tour. It is suitable for that in which area you reach at your required time, it is better to spent there.

If you pick up a rental car in Belgium and drop off in France, there will be a very substantial one-way fee. You can travel by train from Bruges to Tours in 4.5 hours, with an easy change in Lille.

It sounds bizarre, but PARIS is about halfway between the two -- and I echo Nick's suggestion to just take the train -- it's easier, faster, less money, and a lot less stress.

We chose Normandy for 2 nights, then Loire for 3, then ending in Paris. I'll be on my honeymoon and don't want to rely on a train. Europcar is really not that expensive.

Thank you!

the one-way drop charges ARE expensive -- breathtakingly so! Expect the charges to be several hundred euros -- easily doubling the cost of your rental.

You have a ridiculous amount of driving scheduled for just five nights -- especially on your honeymoon, why would you want to spend your days zooming down a boring interstate?

Plan your trip out at www.viamichelin.com -- and add 25% to the estimated drive times, as there are no allowances given for rest stops, construction, traffic, or weather.

Brugges-Caen-Tours-Paris is some 900km -- easily 12 hours of driving, and that's if you take the autoroutes and don't waste much time.

A honeymoon with at least 2 hours in the car every day would not be most people's idea of romantic or enjoyable.' Better to drop a destination, take the train, and enjoy your new spouse and the beginning of your life together.

Youve made a rather significant mistake in your calculations....in your original post, you've said that Bruges-Tours is about 6 hours. This is true.

You then say you're going to Normandy, and THEN to Tours. This is NOT 6 hours.

Assuming that by "Normandy" (which is an enormous region comprising hundreds of square miles) you mean "WW2 Invasion Beaches" -- it's nearly 5 hours from Brugge to Caen - 3 hours from Caen to Tours - and another 4 hours back to Paris. These times are valid ONLY if you are driving at the posted speed limit on the autoroute. You're putting 12 hours of boring windshield time into a matter of a few days.

The petrol will set you back nearly €100, the tolls are somewhere in the range of €70, on top of the one-way drop charges, which are punitive, and you WILL pay them.

Trains are fast, clean, efficient, and inexpensive.

But it's up to you to decide whether time with your new spouse or time with the steering wheel are a higher priority for you.
