Birds in Loches

I was visiting the chateau at Loches and saw many birds swooping towards the castle's Donjon. Can anybody tell me what type of birds they are?

How big? What shape wings? Any hint of colour?

Could be anything from starlings to jackdaws via red kite, swifts and black headed gulls so far :)

I thought they might be starlings at first. They are black with crescent shaped wings and small tails. My friend thought they had a white dot on the back of their neck. They were very agile and almost mimicked the movement of bats.

Swallows are often seen in such places.

The House Martin or Swift are the closest to what we saw.Thank you everyone! These birds were very interesting to watch. In the evening we were at an outdoor concert in the floral gardens and their movements almost appeared to be in sinc with the music. Earlier in the day we were touring the chateau and they were swooping towards the Keep and then pulling up and swooping again. Very beautiful to watch.

If they were screaming as they fly they were swifts. You get all of the swift swallows and martins At the donjon in Loches, so it was probably all three types. Once the sun starts to go down properly (ie, about now - 22.30) you will also see two types of pipistrelle bats, both around the ramparts, but also hawking for insects over the river by the sportsground.

Swifts don't do things quietly and tend to race around 'screaming'

If they were swooping, etc and quietly then they are more likely to be martins

Thank you Itsmeagain2 and WizardofAus. The birds were definitely not quiet so it looks like they were Swifts and given that some had white markings, there must have been Martins as well and possible swallows.
