Things to do for last day in Loire Valley

Hi,

We have 5 days in Loire and wanted a few recommendations. Day one we're doing Amboise (town and chateau), two Chenonceau and Blois, three Loches market (and town, chateau and Azay le Rideau), four to Chartres and day five....?.

We have a car and would probably like to do something different on the final dat. Thought about going to Tours but not sure if it has much to do. Any suggestions for that final day within Loire or a short drive outside (would love to see another area)....also any recommendations for things to do while during the locations we've decided upon?

Thanks for your help!

Some gardens perhaps, such as Villandry or La Chationniere

The Abbey of Fontevraud is also well worth a visit and you might like to seek out some of "Les plus belles villages" of France.

You're covering a lot of ground, and passing a lot of places on the way.

Amboise is worth 2 or 3 hours at most - if you're going to Loches you will get a lot more medieval town than Amboise could hope to offer. Also, Chartres is just on the outskirts of Paris, and will take at least 2 1/2 hourseach way from Amboise - do it on the way home if you must see it, but the stained glass in Tours Cathedral (about 20 minutes from Amboise) is just as good and not covered in scaffolding. There is as much to do in Tours (probably more) than Chartres, but with a lot less travelling.

So:

The afternoon of the day you arrive wander around Amboise, try and find somewhere to eat. Give up, then head to Tours to visit the Cathedral and dine

Day 2 Chenonceau and Montpoupon, having lunch at the Relais de Franceuil

Day 3 (assuming it's Saturday or Wednesday) Loches and Montresor plenty of restaurants to chose from, probably Gerbe d'Or is best

Day 4 Azay le Rideau and Villandry Lunch at Coté cour

Day 5 Cheverny and Chambord (you're on your own here lunch wise, probably Chambord)

There was a nice garden restaurant just up opposite the laneway that leads to Cheverny's gates.

And we ate twice at Gerbe d'Or in Loches. Very, very nice food.

Are you going back to Paris at the end of your Loire stay? If so, why not stop by Chartres at that point. I think it's about a 2-hour drive from Tours, so that would be 4 hours out of your day just traveling if you try to go there from the Loire.

Actually, "the Loire" is a big area. If we knew where you'll be staying, we can help with suggestions of things to see and do. What you have listed is only the tip of the iceberg.

If you want to see another area and you will be driving to Paris via Chartres, I can suggest some places to visit en route.
