Self drive Dijon to Uzes in Provence

We will be leaving Paris on Aug 10 and it is our intention to take the train to Dijon where we will pick up a hire car at around 13:00. We are due in Uzes in Provence, north of Nimes at 17:00 on the 12th. The question is, "What are the best things to see/do between Dijon and Uzes and where would be the best overnight stops on the 10th and 11th?"

All thoughts, ideas and advice welcome.

that drive is only a few hours via the autoroute, so you have oodles of time to putter along the way.

Take a look at www.viamichelin.com -- that will give you multiple options for routes (Michelin-recommended, fastest, shortest, scenic, and avoiding tolls) -- click on the small map when it appears, and it will open a larger, zoomable map in a new window.

Up in the upper-right corner, there will be a tool bar where you can toggle tourist sites, hotels, and restaurants.

Have fun -- it's a huge time vacuum (because it's so easy to get immersed in looking at all of the options ) -- but it's also a very powerful planning tool.

Lyon has loads of history and things - from Roman ruins to modern day. Vienne, just to the south, is a lovely little city with Roman ruins...there's wine, history...what do you want to do?

Thank you so much for your reply. I think we'd like to stay off the main roads and take in the beautiful scenery that i'm sure abounds in that region. We like wine, but obviously in moderation this time because I'll be driving. LOL!! Yeah...I guess more about mind-blowing scenery and the little villages with that special something. This particular 2 days forms part of a 9 week trip and from past experience, castles and churches can tend to dull the senses somewhat.

Thanks again'

if you come from the south, you are better off taking the exit of chalon sur saone north off the A6 motorway

head for santenay and follow the wine route=

chassagne-montrachet,puligny-montrachet,meursault,pommard and beaune

then,aloxe-corton,nuits saint georges, vougeot, vosne romanee, chambolle musigny, morey saint denis and gevrey chambertin

no need to go further as it starts to be built up and dijon is in a mess with tram road works

you have a tasting lunch place in puligny montrachet for whites and one in aloxe corton for reds and whites-closed on sundays and mondays

Make sure that your auto-rental agency is actually open at 13:00--that might be lunch time and the agency could be closed. That happened to us one time; we had to wait until 14:00.
