Based on prior assistance from TA members, we rented a car in Lyon and have 9 days to meander toward Reims where we will overnight and take the TGV into Paris. We pick up our car in Lyon on September 17 and will drop it in Reims on September 26. We are thinking of perhaps the following (quite open to suggestion):
1. Head toward Annecy area for 2 nights
2. Then head toward Jura (Besancon area) for 3 nights to explore this region
3. Then move to region above Dijon for 3 nights as a base and stay in a small town (Flavigny-sur-Ozerain or Montreal or Samur or Grimault near Noyers...we are looking at B&Bs)
4. And a final night closer to Reims so we can arrive in Reims to drop the car by 11 am on September 26 (we already have a B&B reserved in Reims that is convenient to train station and not far from cathedral for our departure to Paris on the 27th).
We have an apartment in Paris for 2 weeks thereafter.
We enjoy history, scenic drives, walks/hikes, good local food, off the beaten path. Have researched quite a few B&Bs that sound good.
Also, since we are traveling this area in the second half of September, should we reserve places ahead...or do you think we can locate a reasonable place by just stopping at a tourism office to locate lodging? We are trying to decide if its feasible to do that, which would allow for flexibility if we love an area.
As a final note, we looked at chateau vaulx saint julien civry from a TA tip and it looks so inviting we may need to go there instead of part 1 above....decisions...decisions.
Open to all suggestions!
