Day trips by car from Noyers

I am looking for a few tips and suggestions for the best destinations in this area for day trips by car from Noyers-sur-Serein. We are renting a gite for a week in Noyers in late July - early August 2012 and want to make the most of the time we have in Burgundy.

We plan to spend three nights in Beaune and two nights in Dijon as well, so we have a full week in the Noyers area and with the car we can venture a fair way afield.

I look forward to some experienced suggestions.

P.S. we really enjoy our wines and regional foods.

Close fom Noyers, if you are into castles : Tanlay and Ancy le Franc (none of them will take a day)

Tonnerre is worth some hours (the old hospital,, the Fosse Dionne)

or Chablis

or, or bit further the abbaye de Cluny

Noyers sur Serein is a lovely village. In 2006 we stayed in a gite near Flavigny sur Ozerain and visited Noyers. There was a good charcuterie where we bought some slices of duck and prune and duck and orange terrine. This is a lovely area . You will have no difficulty filling in a week. Last year we stayed in a gite in Varzy as well, but did not get back to Noyers. We always try to visit any Plus Beaux Villages de France in the areas we visit- they are always worth the trip.

It will be easy to visit Vezelay and a little south is the Chateau de Bazoches- you can see Vezelay from the terrace. Also near Vezelay is St.Pere sous Vezelay wiyh an attractive church, and for something quick and a bit different nearby, the old and new- the bridges of Pierre Pertuis. There is also the Abbaye de Fontenay, Semur en Auxois and Flavigny [of Chocolat fame]. This is where they make the sweet, Anis de Flavigny[ my preference is the original flavour]. You could also visit Avalon and go up to Auxerre. Last year we drove along the canal from Clamecy. And don't forget Epoisses, home of that wonderful cheese.

Burgundy is one of our favourite areas of France. We are also planning a trip in autumn 2012. We were there in october 2010 and the colours were glorious. Sadly Burgundy is not on the agenda next time.

Here's a link to a trip report I wrote about sightseeing near Noyers. It's full of photos and a bit of historical info:

http://tinyurl.com/6dkeozh

Loads of other places nearby to see not mentioned in the report, such as Vézelay, Avallon, Auxerre, Châteauneuf, the châteaux of Commarin and Bussy-Rabutin, etc.

Get your hands on the Michelin maps (scale of 1:200,000) for whatever regions you visit. The Michelin maps have icons for all kinds of historically/touristically interesting things such as châteaux, ruins, churches, abbeys, scenic view points, caves, Roman sites, megaliths, designated scenic roads and many other things. Usually when I'm exploring various regions in France I just look at the map and I am able to plan interesting and scenic drives just reading the map. For instance, I usually look for a designated scenic road, which are highlighted in green, and I especially look for towns with the historic church and/or château icon. I also try to make sure the route goes through as many small villages as possible. Usually putting all these things together I find interesting and scenic drives without even knowing where I am going and with no assistance from a guide book. Often these places are never mentioned in guidebooks and remain completely unknown to many tourists.

Get yourself a good guidebook or two for the area. I like the Michelin Green Guides. If you need restaurant info then get The Michelin Red Guides, which cover restaurants.

You can buy the Michelin maps from their website and here is a link to the page that shows all of the maps of France: http://tinyurl.com/4bt96ev

And speaking of Michelin, you can go to the website viamichelin.com and get info on drive times and distances, toll and fuel costs and suggested routes (i.e. scenic routes). The drive times given do not consider stops (fuel, food, bathrooms) nor do they consider bad weather and traffic.

Here is some other general advice for you. You should google some of the town/tourist office websites for any towns you may want to visit. You will find loads of info on these websites including hotel/accommodation and restaurant info as well as what to see and do in the area. Occasionally the websites have English versions. In doing a google search enter the name of your town followed by the words "site officiel" or "office de tourisme" and this will bring the town to the top of your search. Another thing I like to do to see if a town may be worth visiting is enter the town name in a google search followed by the word "photos". Sometimes I visit a town if I find it looks charming/interesting in photos.

Chateau de Gueddalon is also a fantastic place to visit for a day. They are building a medieval chateau using only medieval materials and methods, it has been going for about 8 or so years now and of course it is different every year.

How about

1. Ancy Le Franc -Tanlay-Chabls - finishing the day in La Feuillette (a little overpriced but good, and it is Chablis) - total driving about 60 miles/85km roundtrip. The day will be long but it is worth it.

2. Abbey of Fontenay, Semur-en-Auxois. In Semur lovely restaurant right by the main city gate - do not remember the name. Go down by the river - magnificent view. About 80 miles/120 km round trip.

3. Avalon-Vezelay -St. Pere. Only go to St. Pere if you are willing to spend E100 per person for dinner (at least) at l'Esperance. We are not that posh so went for lunch, still E60pp. But it is a real treat - check its web site. About 65miles/100km roundtrip.

4. Pontigny -Auxerre. We didn't have enough time for Pontigny, so this is no personal recommendation but people say it is quite a place. In Auxerre, in the abbey Carolingian frescoes are quite impressive. Of course the cathedral and frescoes in the crypt are very interesting too. End the day at St. Pelerin - absolute blast on a cheap.

We had a great time in May doing it all ourselves.

Thank you to everyone who has provided suggestions so far. We will have plenty of fun time researching the references that you given us. I have bought the Michelin Green Guide for Burgundy and I am looking forward to plenty of interesting reading.
