Norovirus at la grande metairie?

Currently booked to go to la grande metairie checking in 24th August. Staying in a euro camp caravan. Just read a report about norovirus outbreak. Don't know whether to cancel or not, tales of vomit in mattresses, pillows on paths etc and little being fond to clean up.

Does anyone know if outbreak continuing, what eurocamp are doing to remove risk etc? A member of our party has serious health problem so cannot just chance it, thanks

Hi,

I think you should check with your GP regarding the situation. The GP will have a better idea of the vulnerability of the person with the health problem and also more knowledge of how the Norovirus is transmitted and how long it can survive outside the GI tract of people.

You should also ring Keycamp/Eurocamp directly, once you've spoken with the GP. Ask what the situation is on the ground, explaining that you have a vulnerable person travelling with you.

I'd also check the fine print of your travel insurance. It might well be the case that you can use this if you are cancelling because of any risk.

I haven't been to this campsite but I have been reading on-line reports of the situation (I didn't know about it until your thread). It would appear that the virus was certainly prevalent in the campsite between the middle of June and the middle of July.

Good luck.

i rang our tour operator (heading the 16th august) they assured us that there have been no cases reported over the past fortnight and the issue was earlier in July...also that the mobile homes had been thoroughly cleaned out

Galway Reds, if you are bringing your car with you, you might consider bringing mattress and pillow covers (we bring them with us anyhow because 2 of us have asthma) and also wiping down the mobile home with Lidl disinfecting wipes. Again this is something I do always.

And wash all the crockery and cutlery and stuff you are using in very hot water - again something I do always.

We were there with Keycamp mid to end of July and it was still rife. I'm 5 months pregnant, we arrived at the campsite at 5pm after 2 days travelling. I could have cried when they told us about the norovirus. We spent the rest of the holiday avoiding all of the campsite facilities. I have my doubts whether Keycamp/Eurocamp would tell you the truth about whether the outbreak is ongoing.

It may be worth taking some anti - viral wipes with you, as suggested above, and also some hand sanitisers to keep handy. Although be careful, the detergent wipes you find in supermarkets are only ANTIBACTERIAL - they WILL NOT kill viruses such as Norovirus. You need to use something more specialist. Theres a brand called Supernova , thats quite widely available thats effective against noro. As long as you wipe things down first and wash your hands frequently you should be fine, just enjoy your trip :)

We were there 8 July and it ruined our holiday. Two of us out of four got it and I'm sure it was from the pool. We lost four days of our hol to actually being ill and the rest to worrying about getting it. If I had be given the choice of changing sites I wouldn't have hesitated

this sort of thing is prevalent enough and people who have it shed the virus for a couple weeks after they are well, so it is probably wise to clean surfaces, door knobs, phones, etc and rewash kitchen items before use, whenever moving into an apartment.

we had a small baby pick this up on the plane many years ago and infect the whole family -- her only exposure was the plane trip and sticking her hands in her mouth after touching surfaces as babies do. since that time I have routinely cleaned the tray tables and armrests on planes also.

We just got back from La Grande Metairie last night and the virus has definitely gone. We knew nothing about it until we arrived and were handed a leaflet that said there had been an outbreak and a bottle of hand sanitiser. We were told there had been no cases for 3 weeks. We did not take any extra precautions and used all the facilities inc all pools every day and travelled with three small children. None of us got sick and I didn''t see or hear about anyone being sick. The eurocamp caravan was spotless. We had a lovely time and I hope you do too!

Thanks for all these comments, district nurses said that we shouldn't risk it as very difficult to clean sufficiently. Euro camp were great, understood and allowed us to switch sites. Thank you euro camp.
