What to do/where to stay

We're thinking of using Clermont as a point to stay for a few days between Paris & Dorodgne area. What are the best things to do in this area? We are in our 50's, love to explore; we'll have a car; love culture, markets and sights. Is there enough to do in this area? We'd also need a nice B&B or boutique hotel around 200 euros or less per night. Any advice is most grateful.

Clermont is great. Auvergne is great.

If you want something which is a bit further south-east'ish (about 40km) down the A75 from C-F and is on the road to Aurilliac... my sister has a place www.le-mouy-vieux.com - you could then head over to La Bourbuole, Lac Chambon, Mont Dore - you will even get to see the source of the Dordogne River!

Depends where you going in the Dordogne but on the way there is so much to see... Rocamadour, Gouffre de Padirac on to Brive la Gaillard... where do I stop!?
