prehistoric cave paintings

Is it possible to see the cave paintings in this region (or other areas, for that matter) - via public transportation? (i.e., we'd like to travel primarily by rail and bus)

You can do a tour out of Sarlat with Ophorus Tours (you can find them on TA on the "things to do Tab" ) They have a tour that focus' on the caves - I think you see Lascaux and Rouffignac caves and the pre-history museum at Les Eyzies.

You cannot book Font de Gaume in advance anymore as of this month! Due to conservation reasons the cave now only allows 80 visitors per day and you will need to queue in the morning to get the ticket for a visit in the day. For Combarelles the tickets can be purchased at the same location and they also sell tickets for Cap Blanc.
