Biarritz and San Sebastian

Hi

Going to Biarritz and San Sebastian at the end of September. We fly in to Biarritz are planning to stay there for a couple of days, then go to San Sebastian for a few days and then back to Biarritz from where we fly home.

Just wondering if we hire a car in Biarritz, is there any hassle with taking it to Spain? Or if we hire a car in San Sebastian, can we leave it back at the airport in Biarritz? Has anyone a rough idea of car hire price in both places? Or would be just be better off travelling by bus/train between the two?

We wanted to stay in an apartment, so we can cater for ourselves but most places we've checked will really only rent out for a week at time. Can anyone recommend any anywhere that rents out for a couple of days or any alternatives?

Thanks in advance

If you don't want to explore any of the area outside Biarritz and San Sebastian you really do not need a car but you would be missing a lot if you just confined your visit to the two towns and didn't see anywhere else. The easiest way to travel between the two would be to take a regular SNCF (French rail) train from Biarritz to Hendaye and then the little Basque railway, Euskotren, from there.

There is generally no issue with renting a car in France and driving into Spain but advise your rental company that you intend to do this. Renting a car in either country and dropping it in the other is not a good plan as you will probably incur a very stiff one-way drop-off fee.

Try www.autoeurope.co.uk or another similar broker if you want to rent a car. You could also try the actual rental companies themselves such as Europcar, Sixt and the rest.

FWIW I would rather stay in St. Jean-de-Luz than Biarritz.

Two votes for you staying in Saint Jean de Luz instead of Biarritz.

Thanks for helpful advice. We'll just hire a car in San Sebastian so.
