Bordeaux - St. Emilion -Dordogne

We will be staying 2 - 3 nights in Bordeaux and then thinking of going and staying in St. Emilion or dordogne area for 2 nights . Wondering , can we go and stay in St. Emilion / dordogne by taking the train? ....is it advisable to do this without renting a car while staying there ?

You really need a car to visit the Dordogne, or even to explore the area around St-Emilion.

You can take a train to St-Emilion. But you really can't do the Dordogne without a car or in two days. Save it for when you have a bare minimum of a week...and a car.

St Emilion has, in effect, no public transport other than the train. I didn't see any car hire offices there.

Depends what you want to do when there. Tours do run to some of the vineyards and you can take the train along the Dordogne valley but anything else requires a car.
